For me the most memorable ‘plot’ point was a line of dialogue from a son to his mother that really affected me later when I thought back on the story. After years of resentment, in a fit of anger the son finally told his mother how he felt. ‘You never wanted me, you just wanted a doll to dress up in your regrets!’ he exclaimed. His mother’s only response was to go silent. And then she said, ‘A doll would have been easier to love.’ Before that line, the story is all buildup. After it, there is all the cleanup. So the rest of the external plot (the financial struggles, the aunt’s visit, the festival) just serves as a medium to slowly and painfully have these two people work their way back from the edge of that cliff. Two people work their way back from the edge of spoken truth and live in the valley below.

This is stretching it a bit, but Richie Tenenbaum’s deeply troubled relationship with his adopted sister, Margot, in The Royal Tenenbaums could be classified as romantic. He loves her and it destroys him. Although Margot is not the stepmother of Richie, it is another example of love trespassing family boundaries. I perceive this in a very different way than I would in a more serious dramatic film, than in a wacky and offbeat comedy, and than in a perverted and seedy thriller. Perhaps the visual style of a film has a lot to do with perceiving such relationships in a particular way.

For me, the best part of the book was the side character development, particularly the best friend of the main character. The best friend enabled the main character to be unhealthy for the vast majority of the book, and then in the end had a heart-wrenching argument with the main character where the best friend finally said, “I can’t follow you there.” The best friend then chose to go home and get healthy instead of sticking by his or her sick friend. Their goodbye was really the emotional climax of the book and completely different from the somewhat satisfying conclusion of the main plot.

I was really excited to see how Jin would pay off the economic subplot that had spanned nearly the entirety of the book. In the end, all of his struggling to build his own economic network of influence and trade in the early portions of the book really paid off. Rather than resorting to simple martial force to quash the influence of other branches of his family, he instead uses economic leverage against them. The culmination of the story is really great for the subplot in that his merchant guild becomes the de facto backbone of new Runcandel economy – all directed at squashing old, exploitative economic systems of old Runcandel. I have to admit, that subplot felt like it meandered somewhat in the mid-section of the book, but the way he brought it all home in the end was fantastic. His was not a simple ‘I won the right to rule’ kind of victory. Instead, his was a true multidimensional victory, for he not only won the right to rule, but also fashioned for himself the practical means by which he shall sustain himself in rule. That was really nice attention to detail in building out the world of the story.

Online aggregator sites also have entertaining comment sections where people can be snarky about bad plot points, one-dimensional villains, and even point out absurd moments in order to have fun with it. It creates a sort of community for these ‘lesser’ works of fiction, although it’s far from great literature. Half the time I’d even read a chapter just to find out what the top commented would be funny enough to say about it. If you end up reading online, don’t forget to read the comments as well. Sometimes they’re even the highlight of the story when it falls into a hole of absurdity and you can’t take it seriously anymore.
