'Magic City' is set in 1959 Miami. It’s a place of fancy cocktails and high stakes. Ike Evans is the manager of the Miramar Playa, a sumptuous hotel that was financed by the Mafia. The structured union of crime and business means that Ike and his investor must discuss an acceptable return on their capital investment. This is not a deal that Ike can drag out over time. As the owner of the hotel, Ike’s also got a family – two teenage children and a wife. The show follows the tale of Ike’s bid to protect his fantasy and the boundaries between right and wrong that he throws aside in order to achieve it. Magnificent as ever, every shot looks like a perfect postcard from bygone days. The images are wonderful, but it’s the story that really matters.

I always thought Magic City was a great show for showing two sides of Miami in the 1950s, the glamour of a tourist destination and the crime and corruption that existed beneath the surface. The show mostly focuses on the life of hotel owner Ike Evans and his family, specifically his son Stevie, wife Vera and his dealings with Miami mob boss Ben Diamond and other criminals. As Evans tries to make a deal with the mob to save his hotel chain he must deal with the consequences of his choices as they have an affect on his family and business.

The characters in ‘Magic City’ are so well-developed, each with their own unique personalities. Ike is not your typical anti-hero. He’s a complex man who wants to protect his family legacy, but his compromising nature is slowly eating away at him. And Ben Diamond, oh Ben Diamond, he’s pure menace. There’s nothing more terrifying than a man who can be sweet as sugar one second and a complete animal the next. Even secondary characters like Lily, a showgirl, and Meg, a detective, are developed to the point where you fall in love with them. It’s a shame the show only got two seasons. There was so much more to the story.

If you like period dramas with a crime element, you have to watch ‘Magic City’. Set in a glamorous hotel in Miami during the 1950s, ‘Magic City’ follows the owner of the hotel, Ike Evans, who makes a deal with the Mafia to ensure his business prospers. The ruthless Mafia boss Ben Diamond is a particularly terrifying character and his dark dealings slowly creeps into Ike’s family life, including the teenager Stevie, who has begun to date the vice girl of Ben Diamond – the mobster’s wife (very messy). The little situations created by the betrayals and struggle for power in the hotel are magnified with a lot of style. The little details of the costumes, sets and the background score transport you to the period, but the show maintains a really dark and real edge to it. By the end of the first season you’ll have no idea who anyone is checking their wand of truth. It’s pretty addictive.

It’s 1959 and Miami is the Magic City. Set in the luxurious hotel, Miramar Playa owned by Ike Evans, Magic City is a crime drama that throws a glamourized layer over politics and power struggles of 1950’s mob life. Main character Ike is a hotel owner trying to save his establishment from downfall. He makes deals with The Mob to save the hotel but has to deal with them whilst looking after his family. The main mob figure is Ben Diamond and there is much tension as Ike has to make tough choices between looking after his family and fulfilling deals with the corrupt Ben and the rest of the gang.

From its stunning retro setting, to its decadent luxury and powerful underworld figures of 1959 Miami, Magic City has got all the wonderful trappings of a high-end crime story. But what really sets it apart for me is the struggle of its main character Ike to hold on to his ideals in a world that is just too treacherous to ignore. The resulting drama of how he can survive to achieve his dreams, and what he must sacrifice along the way to keep his high-end hotel thriving, is compelling to say the least. The family of hotel owner Ike Evans, especially his wife Vera and his two teenage sons, is just as complex and flawed as Evans himself, and their interpersonal conflicts add an extra layer of compelling drama to an already dramatic story.

What is the plot summary of Firehouse?

3 Answers2026-01-20
'Firehouse' is a compelling mix of mystery and character driven drama. A fire station has been haunted by an unsolved arson attack for a decade. New evidence emerges and the fire station’s youngest member, tech-savvy fire investigator Carlos, is determined to solve the case despite orders to the contrary. There is wonderful tension in the story between following procedure and finding out the truth. The author has done a great job in creating an ensemble of fully realized characters, from the sarcastic medics to the manly silence of the ladder crew. The author’s descriptions of the fires are so graphic you can even smell the smoke. It was a satisfying read and even left me feeling a little bit nostalgic for these very real and very fictional characters and their world.

What is the plot summary of High Crimes?

In examining the two principal versions of The Infill Rob Roy story, it is clear that there are markedly different cultural anxieties expressed. A late 1990s/early 2000s novel or film would have tapped into a post-Cold War fear of unknown criminal activities and the insecurity of the suburban environment. Meanwhile, a 2010s graphic novel has become a vehicle for expressions concerning memory, trauma, and the ways in which adventurism and the military are becoming commodities, often luridly packaged for exploitation by outside companies. Although both stories center on a conspiracy, in each case the nature of the conspiracy and the context in which it is played out will necessarily be somewhat specific to the time in which the work was written. How two seemingly disparate stories can be housed under the same title and, in some respect, speak to the same anxieties of their respective eras is fascinating.

What is the plot summary of 'Hold the Dream'?

One plot criticism I have is the moral black and white-ness of it. The heroine, Paula is perfect. She is virtuous, hardworking and noble. Her enemies are all negative characters such as envious, lazy and deceitful. It's a melodrama type of plot where you get emotional satisfaction from seeing good receive their due and evil get what's coming to them. I should mention that this is a pretty black and white morality tale, so if you are looking for a very nuanced story with many shades of gray, then this probably isn’t the story for you. Instead, it’s a very clear and straightforward right versus wrong tale with a great and honorable hero in Paula. The complexity in this tale comes from the numerous and intricate plots to bring her down, not from any moral ambiguity on the part of her enemies. It’s very refreshing in that it is a clear and straightforward story with a good hero.

What is the plot summary of The Blue Castle?

'The Blue Castle' is the 29-year-old Valancy Stirling’s midlife crisis and it is wonderful. After being misdiagnosed with terminal brain cancer, Stirling decides to get on with things and adopts a cat called Banjo. She marries the town’s bad boy and decorates their new home with the most garish wallpaper possible, just to really piss off her perfectly tasteful relatives. The slow-burn romance between Valancy and her husband, Barney Sayers, is adorable. Sayers calls the awkward Stirling ‘Moonlight’ and teaches her how to canoe. The biggest twist in the book isn’t the misdiagnosis of Stirling’s cancer, it’s that she was never ever the problem. The cruelties of her family and the mean-spirited gossip of the townspeople just didn’t matter once Stirling had chosen to be happy. And the final scene of the book with Stirling walking into a party of her relatives, all of them shocked into silence by her appearance in a red dress and with a smug look on her face, is just the best.

What is the plot summary of The Listeners?

This is a very masterful plot for a writer. High stakes for the future of human knowledge, for the reputation of science, and for the soul of one believer. Instead of threatening his life, the greatest fear for this character is that we will reject or destroy this gift to him because of our own irrational fears. This is very difficult to write in this fashion and he pulls it off magnificently.

How does The Magician end? Spoilers explained

The ending of The Magicians is all about Quentin’s relationship with Fillory, and the fact that Fillory is both real and escapism. For most of the series, Quentin finds that trying to escape to a fantasy world only makes real life worse. But in the end, Quentin has finally learned to escape from his escapism. When he is given the chance to return to Fillory as a king, he declines, choosing the real world over the fantasy one. The last act of magic Quentin performs in the world serves as evidence to the enormous growth he has experienced. Performing a very difficult, technical magic spell for no reason other than it being satisfying to perform well, the workmanlike magic also possesses an artistic quality. No longer does he search for magic in order to attain special status. Instead, the mature Quentin uses magic in the same manner that one would practice a craft or a discipline. That this esteemed writer of fantasy ends the story of a once-angsty-teenager with such an adult action is profound. And in contrast, Julia finds healing through transcendence of the magical world and return to her own in order to come to terms with her own extremely traumatic experiences.

What is the plot summary of Between Sun and Moon?

11 Answers2025-11-28
At its heart, this conflict isn’t one that is solved through war, but instead through a magically binding trial before a neutral, celestial court. The story follows the two young and inexperienced advocates for the Sun and Moon as they travel the cosmos, gathering evidence and calling witnesses to several different mythic locations. All of their discoveries must then be used to present a case in court based on the ancient laws of divine origin that were used to create the two. As the case heats up, one of the advocates will find himself growing more and more attached to a key witness for the opposing side, putting his case in jeopardy. The plot is the investigation into the cause of the opposing side’s actions and the tense, procedural drama of the actual trial. The fate of two realms will depend on the smallest of legal technicalities and a single effective argument. Weirdly compelling.

What is the plot summary of Case Histories?

A friend who reads only thrillers was amazingly disappointed by this book. According to him, nothing happens. Actually, quite a lot happens but the plot is all internal. It is about the decades of silence after a tragic event and about the psychological development of the protagonist and the two Land sisters who have transformed their family home into a sort of mausoleum. And there is Theo Wyre, who has turned his body into a kind of monument. This is a book by a writer who is essentially concerned with plotting as a way of exploring the interior lives of his characters and Jackson Brodie is a man of great interior life, a man whose greatest skill is to be empathetic and to sit with people’s grief. External events – his investigations into various crimes past and present – are merely the surface level of what is really going on in this novel. If you read for character alone, this is the best thriller you will ever read.

What is the plot summary of Summer Secrets?

3 Answers2025-11-13
Imagine finding out a shocking family secret while dealing with your first crush. ‘Summer Secrets’ follows June as she searches for the truth about her mom’s hidden past. The search becomes a deeply personal journey as June tries to piece together the clues and her journal becomes a personal and emotional search for the truth. The setting of the story on a lake side adds to the story of stormy nights and hope filled sunsets. What resonates with me is the way Summer Secrets explores forgiveness. The anger June feels toward her mom is palpable but so too is the moment where June realises that adults are just people and therefore prone to making mistakes. And Eli – oh Eli! The transition from June’s witty banter with this boy to full on romance is sublime. In particular the scenes where he helps her work out the journal entries were amazing. It makes me want to go and rummage through my own attic to see if I can uncover any family secrets.
