The full title of this novel is ‘Hold the Dream’. The book is the second in British author Barbara Taylor Bradford’s A Woman of Substance series and continues the story of Emma Harte’s granddaughter Paula who attempts to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps to become one of London’s wealthiest businesswomen and take on her ruthless competitors in the cutthroat world of business. Another take on the dream as driver of main characters is a web novel titled When Dreams Are Made. This story is about a person granted the power to shape reality through their dreams, only to soon discover that the seemingly wonderful life they are creating for themselves is a precarious thing and that they must make desperate choices to protect it – or to even find out what really is real and what is not in their dreamed up world.

In ‘Hold the Dream’ Jilly Cooper continues to tell the story of Emma Harte’s family in ‘Hold the Dream’ as they are carried by her granddaughter Paula into a new era as she tries to hold together the empire that her grandmother built. It is not easy, especially when she has to make harsh business decisions and keep loyal to her friends and relations.

Much of the story is concerned with Paula’s fight to come to terms with her own vulnerabilities and her struggles to come to terms with her love/hate marriage and the corporate world she operates in. Set largely in boardrooms and country mansions, the atmosphere is sometimes one of opulence and excess and at other times, tense and pressurized. Paula struggles with the legacy of Emma and whether she is developing the dream into something truly special or distortining it. A deeply emotional and complex plot with much to offer on the subject of ambition and how it can affect others around us.

'Hold the Dream' is a wonderful saga of legacy and of how to be resilient when faced with tough challenges. It is set in the retail world, left to Paula O’Neill, Emma Harte’s daughter, and follows her struggle to preserve her grandmother’s empire against many enemies, not least hostile takeovers and family members seeking to destroy all that has been built up by Emma. Relationships are up for grabs in the cutthroat world of big business, and O’Neill captures this acutely – it is clear at any given time who Paula can trust with her life, and at the drop of a hat this could be switched to total betrayal. Paula herself is an interesting and complicated character – no saint, no tyrant, Paula is a woman struggling to come to terms with her own developing power and with who she is becoming as a result of her deepening involvement with the various characters in the book.

Picking up where ‘A Woman of Substance’ left off, this sequel follows Paula Harte as she expands the family business globally. A ruthless business woman, Paula is constantly embroiled in boardroom battles and personal struggles as she deals with her husband’s infidelity, a creeping sense of sabotage from her cousin, and the constant shadow of her mother’s legacy. She’s a very strong and flexible person but her biggest weakness is her willingness to trust the people she loves to do the right thing. It’s a powerful and dramatic story that explores the theme of inheritance: not just money, but the courage to use the assets that have been handed down to you to create your own future.

'Hold the Dream' is Paula's story. When Emma Harte’s business needs to be protected, Paula is the woman to do it. She has to fight off all sorts of corporate predators as well as deals arranged by her own family. Meanwhile, she is struggling to bring up her two kids and save her marriage. Gritty power struggles between glamorous people make for a great story and Paula’s journey from uncertain heir to confident business woman is winning. It’s a great family saga mixed with a good business novel.

What is the plot of In Your Dreams?

I want to start by saying that on paper this is a story about a musician who loses her hearing. In her dreams she starts to “hear” music again. She wakes up and writes it down. The music becomes a groundbreaking album. But that would be a pretty cheesy read. Instead the read is so completely swept up in the beauty of her experience that you forget that you are reading a “plot” at all. Mostly the story is of a woman fighting to keep her work from being stolen by a producer who wants to make a bunch of money off of her. But that’s not really the point. The point is her internal struggle to redefine herself as a person and as a musician in a world where her primary sense has been removed. The dream world in which she creates her new music is far richer and far stranger than her real life. And in the end she finds a way to perform that music for an audience in a solitary concert where she plays all of the dream music that she had written down. It’s really beautifully done as a character study, which is more important to me than plot.

What is the plot summary of The Listeners?

This is a very masterful plot for a writer. High stakes for the future of human knowledge, for the reputation of science, and for the soul of one believer. Instead of threatening his life, the greatest fear for this character is that we will reject or destroy this gift to him because of our own irrational fears. This is very difficult to write in this fashion and he pulls it off magnificently.

What is the ending of 'The Dreamers' explained?

While all of these interpretations are fun, it’s also important to note the purely poetic value of the writing in the final pages of the book. After a long time for developing characters and plotting, the prose becomes sparse and clean, in many places bordering on the hypnotic. So while one can continue to try to interpret the work on the analytical level, at some point it simply stops mattering. The prose becomes almost music, washing over one. The experience of reading the final pages is that of experiencing a series of sentences and images and somehow being affected by them. The meaning is in the music. The book ends as a piece of abstract emotional music. The novel resolves the dissonance that had been established throughout its pages in a calm, open chord. And that is good enough. It’s even logical enough, although one cannot explain it in terms of plot. That is what great writing does: it bypasses the brain and goes straight to the nerves.

What is the plot summary of Between Sun and Moon?

At its heart, this conflict isn’t one that is solved through war, but instead through a magically binding trial before a neutral, celestial court. The story follows the two young and inexperienced advocates for the Sun and Moon as they travel the cosmos, gathering evidence and calling witnesses to several different mythic locations. All of their discoveries must then be used to present a case in court based on the ancient laws of divine origin that were used to create the two. As the case heats up, one of the advocates will find himself growing more and more attached to a key witness for the opposing side, putting his case in jeopardy. The plot is the investigation into the cause of the opposing side’s actions and the tense, procedural drama of the actual trial. The fate of two realms will depend on the smallest of legal technicalities and a single effective argument. Weirdly compelling.

Who are the main characters in Dreams of Desire?

For me, the dual protagonists were Elara and Kaelen. The way their initial enemies turned into enemies-turned-allies, and possibly even more than that, was at the heart of the story. Elara is a book-smart, naive dreamer who has no idea how to cope in the brutal politics of the dream world, while Kaelen is a cynical harden veteran, full of survivor’s guilt. It was really wonderful to see Elara slowly soften Kaelen up, and to see Kaelen slowly temper Elara’s ideals and help her to see reality. The dialogue between them was all wonderful, really – very, very sharp, with lots of subtext, and I could really see their relationship grow by brick, slowly but painfully. The rest of the cast of characters played around the edges of the two, and really, the story lived and died on the readership of these two characters. I fully believed in them both.

What is the plot summary of Firehouse?

'Firehouse' is a compelling mix of mystery and character driven drama. A fire station has been haunted by an unsolved arson attack for a decade. New evidence emerges and the fire station’s youngest member, tech-savvy fire investigator Carlos, is determined to solve the case despite orders to the contrary. There is wonderful tension in the story between following procedure and finding out the truth. The author has done a great job in creating an ensemble of fully realized characters, from the sarcastic medics to the manly silence of the ladder crew. The author’s descriptions of the fires are so graphic you can even smell the smoke. It was a satisfying read and even left me feeling a little bit nostalgic for these very real and very fictional characters and their world.

What is the plot summary of Country People?

The book is structured by use of documents. We read extracts from Elara’s mother’s diary, from old farm ledgers, from the rough language of a bank’s refusal to lend, from a cheerful flyer about the farmers’ market. Each of these is hard fact, emotional history, and ticking clock, in turn. A diary entry from the 1930s reveals a similar blight was occurring at the time. A ledger from the bank reveals a pattern of debt that the family has accumulated. The documents together serve as a piece of the puzzle that the family is trying to solve in order to figure out what went wrong and if there is any hope of fixing it. It is a literary technique that provides a rich texture and sense of physical evidence to explore the emotional core of the story.

What is the plot summary of loving never forgetting?

1 Answers2025-10-31
'Never Loving and Forgetting’ is a lovingly crafted and very emotional drama examining the issues of love, loss and relationships in the human life. It is centered round two characters and basically an exploration of the intensity of love faced by memory and fate. A fundamental connection between a male lead and female lead is exposed when one instant moment changes their lives forever. Their newly found love will face immense hardship in trying to hold on as they search for a way to be together. The story also focuses on how one of them loses his memory and struggles to regain recollections from his past, with every recovered memory openly contradicting the current reality he is faced with. He will struggle trying to find a balance between memories of the past and reality of the current, even as he searches for ways to reconnect with others including his current love interest. The scenes are beautifully shot to capture tension as well as coziness. Because of how the story is structured, we get to see a lot of development of the two leads as well as other characters. In supporting roles, they bring a lot of depth to the story, and some even complicate things for the leads or aid them in ways that are unexpected. Together, the entire cast explores the significance of memories and shared experiences of the two leads and how those affect their lives. The show is able to pull a lot of emotions out of the viewer and forces us to think about how love can still exist in people’s lives even when memories are being taken away and how stronger bonds of connection than what physical life can create exist in many cases. The scenes have definitely pulled tears out of me on numerous occasions, so much that it’s evident the creators truly cared about developing and telling this meaningful story. In summary, ‘Loving Never Forgetting’ is a beautiful portrayal of the love that can exist between two people, even when the woman has lost her memory. This drama will touch your heart and get you thinking. It is a love story that people in all sorts of relationships can relate to, and can help you to consider the importance of past and present. I highly recommend this, and I guarantee that ‘Loving Never Forgetting’ is one of those few dramas that will stick with you long after the drama has ended.

What is the plot summary of High Crimes?

9 Answers2026-02-04
In examining the two principal versions of The Infill Rob Roy story, it is clear that there are markedly different cultural anxieties expressed. A late 1990s/early 2000s novel or film would have tapped into a post-Cold War fear of unknown criminal activities and the insecurity of the suburban environment. Meanwhile, a 2010s graphic novel has become a vehicle for expressions concerning memory, trauma, and the ways in which adventurism and the military are becoming commodities, often luridly packaged for exploitation by outside companies. Although both stories center on a conspiracy, in each case the nature of the conspiracy and the context in which it is played out will necessarily be somewhat specific to the time in which the work was written. How two seemingly disparate stories can be housed under the same title and, in some respect, speak to the same anxieties of their respective eras is fascinating.

What is the plot summary of Summer Secrets?

3 Answers2025-11-13
Imagine finding out a shocking family secret while dealing with your first crush. ‘Summer Secrets’ follows June as she searches for the truth about her mom’s hidden past. The search becomes a deeply personal journey as June tries to piece together the clues and her journal becomes a personal and emotional search for the truth. The setting of the story on a lake side adds to the story of stormy nights and hope filled sunsets. What resonates with me is the way Summer Secrets explores forgiveness. The anger June feels toward her mom is palpable but so too is the moment where June realises that adults are just people and therefore prone to making mistakes. And Eli – oh Eli! The transition from June’s witty banter with this boy to full on romance is sublime. In particular the scenes where he helps her work out the journal entries were amazing. It makes me want to go and rummage through my own attic to see if I can uncover any family secrets.
