I've spent enough time trawling through tags on AO3 to have some strong hunches. Steve/Bucky from the Marvel games and adjacent content is still a juggernaut—honestly, it's hard to even browse the 'Marvel' tag without tripping over it. The wartime history, the 'man out of time' angst, it's a perfect storm. And I think Aloy/Varl from the 'Horizon' series quietly built a massive, dedicated base while everyone was debating Erend versus Avad. It's the grounded, slow-build dynamic versus the flashier potential pairings that seemed to really hook people. You see these huge fic chains that just spiral out from one 'what if' moment.
Dragon Age is always a fascinating case study because the ships shift with each new game. Solas/Female Lavellan from 'Inquisition' absolutely exploded, to the point it feels like its own sub-fandom with a very specific, almost academic tone. But you still see the old guard for Zevran/Warden or Fenris/Hawke holding strong. It's less about the current 'popular' game and more about which relationship left the deepest narrative wound that fans feel compelled to stitch up or tear open further. The Cullen/mage Trevelyan stuff also has a surprisingly robust and cozy corner, which I appreciate on days when I'm not up for cosmic tragedy.

Don't sleep on the legacy pairings. The Mass Effect fandom still runs on Shakarian (Garrus/FemShep). It's been over a decade, and the tag updates daily. It's become a comfort zone, a foundational pillar. You get new writers discovering the games and adding their own takes to this massive, existing library. That kind of enduring activity says more about a ship's hold than any temporary spike in trends might.

Everyone mentions the obvious big ones, so I'll toss in a couple that feel huge in their circles but maybe fly under the radar elsewhere. Goro Akechi/Ren Amamiya from 'Persona 5' is practically its own industry. The sheer volume of 'coffee shop AU' and 'rival detectives' fics is staggering, and the discourse around it is... intense, let's say. It's less a ship and more a cultural force within that fandom.
Also, the Astarion/Tav wave from 'Baldur's Gate 3' is a recent tidal wave. It's not just the numbers—it's the sheer speed and creativity of the response. People latched onto his character arc with a ferocity I haven't seen in a while, producing everything from hurt/comfort epics to shockingly domestic post-game fluff almost overnight. That one's still climbing, and I don't see it stopping.

Revon Hawthorne has a secret.
His adoptive billionaire family is forcing him to live as a Beta, but in reality, he’s an Omega. But that’s okay, because Revon had always wanted the average Beta life.
So, he’s pretty certain he’ll be able to pretend without a problem. After all, he doesn’t care for Alphas. So, why would he ever have a dalliance with one?
But then, after getting brutally and publicly rejected by the Omega girl he’s been crushing on for years, he runs into Adam Kennedy, son of the richest family in Caveat city, the Golden boy of Sawhill Prep School, and most important of all, an Alpha.
In a deserted bathroom...
Right as Adam is rushing into a full-blown rut, triggering his own latent heat...
This chance encounter will blossom into a love story neither of them had dared to anticipate, driven by lust, and forbidden by family to the point of punishment.
They think they will be able to keep their blossoming love a secret, but their school is smaller than they think, and the very girl who rejected Revon wants Adam to herself.
And she will go to any length to make sure that no one stands in her way.
Especially if that person is carrying Adam’s child.

“When passion takes control, nothing stays innocent.”
Some cravings are too sinful to confess, too dangerous to speak aloud. '𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒' which are whispered in the dark, written between trembling thighs, and etched in the silence after desire has burned through reason.

My love for gaming landed me in the World's Top Gaming Company as a new intern. On my first day I was paired up with another intern who seemed to be keeping some secrets. I was quite curious. So I started to keep an eye on him. Only to be shocked by seeing his dragon form. Hear me as I narrate you my love story.
Wait, this is such a specific niche. The ones that hit hardest for me are usually found in massively single-player RPG fandoms. The dynamic of the player-controlled character having a slow-burn connection with another party member just hits different.
I was never into the shipping scene in multiplayer games, honestly. But give me a story where a Warden from 'Dragon Age' is figuring out their thing with Alistair, written from the perspective of the player wrestling with dialogue choices and reloading saves, and I’m sold. It captures that weird meta-intimacy of shaping a relationship through a screen.
Lots of good stuff in the 'Mass Effect' and 'Baldur’s Gate 3' tags, too. The fun part is seeing how different authors interpret the silent protagonist’s inner voice.
Honestly, I just skip the ones where the player character is too perfectly self-inserted; I prefer the messiness.
Sometimes you find a story that’s so off the rails it becomes its own sort of addiction. The grammar might be shaky, the plot might rely on a dozen tired tropes stacked together, but it taps into something we collectively crave. Like, I’ve seen a few notorious ones that are basically wish-fulfillment on steroids—an overpowered OC inserted into the canon world, romancing everyone, fixing every problem with zero effort. It’s not 'good' by any objective literary standard, but man, there’s a comfort in the predictability.
It’s similar to watching a B-movie with friends; the flaws are part of the experience. You gather in the comments to laugh at the clunky dialogue or the bizarre plot twist, and that shared, almost ironic enjoyment builds a community. The story becomes a social object, a meme within the fandom. So the readership isn’t always about admiring craft. Often, it’s about participating in a chaotic, communal vibe that you can’t get from polished, published novels.
