The primary source of ASSTR material is directly from their website. Free to read, the material is provided in the form of a huge archive of user generated material. This material can be fairly contrasted with ‘SINFUL PLEASURES: Short Filthy Stories’ which is a collection of short stories available on a reading app that I have been using lately. This material is very direct and to the point, reading like a quick, uncomplicated short story that can be read in a short period of time with no hang-ups in between.

asstr.org is currently functional, though hours of peak usage may cause site failure. Typically, accessing the site through the ‘Authors’ list is easiest, since they are organized alphabetically and searching can be prone to errors. The ‘Authors’ list also contains a ‘Kristen’s Archives’ subsection with some of the most popular content ever. For this vast library of erotic free content, you might have to put up with a few pop-up ads on the mirrors. Many newer erotica sites reuse the ideas and themes that were brought forth by asstr.org decades ago. This is rather surprising.

ASSTR is a fascinating relic from the early days of web culture as it relates to erotic literature. Outside of the main site, remnants of the archive exist on mirror sites and in forums, including a large collection of ASSTR stories that were re-uploaded to a forum for retro erotica enthusiasts a few years ago. Stories are generally terrible, but occasionally wonderful. Recently, I finished reading an unfinished cyberpunk story that was written by an anonymous programmer in 1998. It’s a sensuous, hard scifi tale that follows a number ofStorytellers and their Tales through a futuristic world of man and woman, or at least, it was when the author was writing it in 1998. It’s amazing how the amateur hours of Storytellers and their Tales can evoke a particular time and place, be it the fantasies of a person with a dial-up connection or explorations of gender that were not yet given to the mainstream. The archive is incomplete, but its cultural importance to explore the pre-commercial space in which creative people once worked is worth the hunt.

If you’re looking for content from ASSTR, then the Wayback Machine at archive.org is your new best friend. I’ve managed to pull a load of ‘lost’ stories from the site’s many past iterations using the site’s search facility and typing in ‘ASSTR’ to reveal the main site as well as many subdirectories of past content. Each snapshot of the site feels like digging through the ruins of a long-abandoned site and never quite knowing what broken and ancient piece of porn you’ll uncover next. I’ve particularly enjoyed finding the odd author’s collection of their work that seems to have vanished from the site, only to be rediscovered in some long-forgotten backup from 2005 or wherever. The search term ‘site:asstr.org’ followed by the relevant search term (or words) will take you on a trip through ASSTR’s history and allows you to find exactly what you’re looking for. A recent example of this was a search for the ‘Office Taboo’ series by a particular author. I had thought that this had been lost forever, but it turned up in a 2012 backup of the site.

Around the time I started looking into niche erotica, I discovered the legendary ASSTR archive. ASSTR is a huge online repository of amateur-written stories of all kinds of kinky and “mainstream” flavor. The site looks like it’s been left to rot since the early 2000s and is all text with very little design flair. You can still access the main ASSTR archive at ASSTR.org, as well as a number of mirrors at ASSTR.org/files and elsewhere. The content on ASSTR is so raw and unedited compared to just about everything else on the web today that it even feels kind of private, like you’re reading someone’s notebook.

Each category has tons of stories, all of them tagged, which makes searching a lot of fun. Many stories seem to be in progress, and some are absolute masterpieces, so it’s a lot of fun just searching for new stuff. Be warned, though, that some of the links may not work at all, since there have been a few close calls with ASSTR going down in the past. But the quality of the unabashed creativity that’s on the site as opposed to most other erotica sites online is what keeps me coming back.

Are there similar sites to ASSTR for stories?

ASSTR vaults. Ah, nostalgia. I don’t have any perfect one-to-one equivalents, but there are a lot of sites around nowadays that host pretty much identical material to what you’d find on the above sites for free: LitErotica and StoriesOnline for a start, which have been around nearly as long and host a vast amount of written material by users. Of course, the biggest exception to this is probably the Archive of Our Own (AO3), which is, for better or worse, the giant of the fanfiction space – their tagging is light-years ahead of ASSTR’s ever having been. For original content, Wattpad and Royal Road are probably now the places where most of the action of web-based serials happens. What I’m missing is the old-school archive-by-folder approach to hosting stories. While there are certainly many niche forums, independent author sites, etc., that offer this kind of experience, they’re scattered about the internet, and you really need to know what you’re looking for in terms of specific communities or tags.

What are the most popular ASSTR stories?

I surrendered long ago to Project Rastko. Every time I tried to use the site to find something I ended up getting lost in three clicks reading something entirely irrelevant. I’ll wait for someone to post a direct link to one of these ‘classics’ people are talking about. I don’t have the exploratory skills for Rastko. 90s internet was a different beast and I’m a modern creature that can’t survive without a search bar on a site.

Where can I read completed Wattpad stories for free?

It’s actually structured in such a way to make the completion of the work paid. In other words, it’s the carrot at the end of the work to pay for the completion of the story. For example, you get to read the first 30 chapters or so for free and then you hit a paywall for the last 10 chapters or so. So in terms of where you can find unofficial PDFs of the work, I sort of have to say that it’s sort of a bad idea to look for them because you’d be pirating the work of some poor, young writer who’s really trying to make it big. No, better to read Wattpad as a means to read free, ongoing serials and either pay for the end of the story or read it as it’s updating.

Of course, there’s a lot of fun in comparing book to show. But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. To do this sort of comparison, you’d really need to read the whole, unedited text – something that a free sample would not be able to give you past the introductory setup. The free sample is like the pilot episode of a show. If you like the pilot, you can then subscribe to the channel to watch the rest of the episodes. There is no way to stream an entire TV show for free on its official network (unless you have a subscription). Bookstores work in much the same way as TV networks – the free sample is your free trial, and then you go to the library or buy the book as a subscriber.

The academia lit lover may find academic and literary novels released as open access by the publisher, including works supported by public funds. These are often released as PDFs directly off a publisher or author’s website. Unlike typical fiction released as open access, these titles are not promoted in the same way and thus are hidden from the general public. Yet, dense, award-winning literary fiction of the highest academic status is released for free. Unlike the numerous free titles on Amazon, these are released slowly and of high prestige.

You can experience Wattpad totally for free by downloading the Wattpad app from your device’s app store. It’s totally legitimate and safe and there’s tons of content. The mobile experience is actually really cool because you can read in little chunks. There’s also the option to download individual stories so you can read them offline when you’re on the move or have no internet. I’ve wasted hours of my life browsing the horror tag and finding tons of super original and creepy stories that you wouldn’t find in a normal bookstore. One minor complaint is that there are video ads for chapters, but that can be kind of broken from a reading perspective anyway. For people who don’t want to see ads though, you can subscribe for a premium version of Wattpad and it’s really not needed to read the vast majority of the stories though. The social features to read lists of other users’ favorite stories is really great for finding new stories too.

While it’s possible to find great books on any platform (free or paid), the platforms themselves matter less than your ability to filter and the information you get from other readers. Learning to use advanced search operators can help you find more of what you need on any platform. For example, AO3 allows you to exclude tags, pair up characters, and set a word count. Google search can also be filtered by using “site:[website URL]” followed by your search terms to only look for information within a single website. Furthermore, word of mouth is valuable. Find a reviewer on Goodreads or a Twitter user who reads in a similar vein to yourself and they can alert you to free books, new authors publishing on free platforms, and even older archives of books that you may have otherwise missed. Essentially, the best sources of information are not necessarily the most obvious, and it is building a network of sources that will provide the most relevant information to you as a reader.

Where can I read Wattpad completed stories for free?

Using the ‘Reading List’ feature on SFFWorld is so obvious and I feel stupid for not thinking of it earlier. When you read a completed story, you can add it to your reading list instead of immediately starting to read it. So, for example, I have a public reading list for completed To-Reads called ‘Completed To-Read’. Stories are added to this list as I come across them and I get around to reading them. It’s my own little library, which over time becomes a really useful resource for other readers. The lists also help the authors, since getting added to a list increases their visibility. My lists are currently organized by genre and by mood, but there are lots of other ways to do it. Using the ‘Reading List’ feature is how you build a sustainable, long-term relationship with the SFFWorld platform.

Where can I read alien romance books for free online?

9 Answers2025-08-15
The Archive of Our Own (AO3) has an enormous amount of original fanfiction posted there, which is listed under the tag ‘Original Work’. You can search for works of fandom ‘Original Work’ and then add tags for ‘Alien/Human Relationships’, ‘Science Fiction Romance’, ‘Non-Human Sentience’ etc. This tagging is extremely detailed, so you can find whatever sort of relationship development you’re in the mood for – slow burn, enemies-to-lovers, soulmates, etc. Quality varies from amateur to published-author quality. All of it is free to read and download, supported by donations to the site. There are even a few authors who post here before publishing on Amazon, as it’s something of a practice ground for them. Knowing how to use the tags to find exactly what you want can be a treasure trove of stories.
