For digital fiction fans using Android, what's the best mobile app for reading MOBI ebooks? Some downloaded novels won't open in my regular reader.

In order to read mobi files on your Android, you need to install the Kindle App on your Android from the Play Store. Open it and go to the menu. Import PDF or Import Document. This will import your mobi file. Alternatively you could use Moon+ Reader or FBReader. Import your mobi file into one of these. Then use the app to read your file. Mobi files are one of my Android reading preferences. My #1 reading app for Android is the Kindle app. It is very reliable and syncs with all of my Amazon content. Install the app. Move the mobi file to the appropriate folder on your Android phone (the Kindle folder). The book should then appear in your Kindle library. You can manually add it by going into the settings of the app.

I often download mobi files that are anthologies of short stories, etc. articles. Calibre’s viewer handles these type of files well. The Table of Contents is displayed in the sidebar and as long as the mobi was correctly constructed, each short story or article will be listed as a separate entry in the TOC. You can click on any of these to go to that story. This makes the Calibre viewer far superior to simple text viewers such as Notepad, etc. which would just display a huge amount of text. The search function (Ctrl+F) also searches the whole book and returns results in a split second. Ideal for finding a particular quote etc. Very useful for anthology type books.

For me, the most sustainable model to read is a mix of models: reading new releases borrowed from the local library, reading for free the classics available on Project Gutenberg, occasionally buying a book from your favorite author to support him/her directly, and using the author’s freebies to discover new series to follow by that author.
Each method for gaining access to ebooks has its weaknesses, and most are fragile. The site for the pirated book could get shut down at any time. Links to sites with free ebooks can become dead at any time. Ebooks can become corrupted. On the other hand, library systems and public domain projects are to be relied upon. They are funded by taxes or non-profits whose mission is to preserve and make available large numbers of books.
Support community based, long term, sustainable models of reading instead. Have the free book be a bonus on top of your regular reading from sustainable sources. That way you are building your reading habit on something solid, something that will last decades to come, and not on the mercy of some ad laden site hosted in a country where copyright laws are lax.

Mixed results for me. Some of the conversions don’t work if I don’t put ‘convert’ in the subject line and others work just fine and arrive as a book. I’ve found it is often dependent on the original source of the mobi file as well as some of the converters out there. Files from older sources as well as a few of the newer ones require a bit of a push but in the end it’s my preferred method of getting books on my Kindle. No cables to dig out and no hassle with folders. Simple email and off you go. It’s one of the better features of the Kindle but not often mentioned.

After I read this thread I tested it with my Kindle Voyage. As already described, you press the top corner of the screen to bring up the black ribbon. Interestingly enough, when you have set your Kindle to ‘every page’ (instead of ‘less often’), the black screen even flashes for a brief moment when setting a bookmark. However, if you have set your Kindle to ‘less often’, the black ribbon just appears – no full screen refresh involved. This seems to be a very minor detail but it could be important for people who are sensitive to screen flicker.Bookmarking a PDF now feels even more seamless when I have set my Kindle to ‘less often’ for page refreshes.
