Yes, you can read Tamil PDFs on Kindle but there are some work arounds required. My cousin who reads a lot of Tamil literature had lots of problems with her Kindle reading Tamil PDFs. The native PDF viewer on Kindle has lots of problems with syllabic clusters, does not handle right-to-left scripts properly and does not handle vowel modifiers. She ended up buying Tamil eBooks from Kindle Store as they are formatted for her properly. But for free Tamil PDFs she uses Calibre to convert them to MOBI format and she uses Tamil Unicode fonts which are pre-installed in Calibre. However she has to manually adjust the margins of each book. There are tablets that support reading Tamil books specifically like ‘Lithium’ but then you will be giving up the Kindle’s glare-free reading experience.

I've tried reading Tamil PDFs on my Kindle. It works but often in somewhat unpredictable ways. The Kindle can read PDFs, but Tamil text is not Latin script, so it doesn't always work well. The text will often display but get the formatting wrong and look weird. Converting the PDF to MOBI or AZW3 using Calibre can help to get a better formatted version of the book, but often the complex scripts don't translate correctly.

Sideloading Tamil books or emailing them to your Kindle email address might work, and can often be tweaked to work once you figure out the kinks. Right now, the Amazon ecosystem isn’t perfectly optimized for non-Latin languages, but Amazon is working on it. I recommend searching for official Tamil versions of books you want to read in the Kindle Store, as those are optimally configured for your device. The rest is just DIY book love, and can be quite fun if you are a bookworm with a techy bent.

It’s a bit of an uneven road for reading Tamil literature on the Kindle. While my Paperwhite is wonderful for English literature, Tamil PDFs render up very small and all muddled. Apparently, Kindle PDF support isn’t written with scripts that have lots of complex characters in mind. Instead, I can use Amazon’s ‘Send to Kindle’ functionality with EPUB files that reflow for me, or use tools like Kindle Comic Converter to resize the PDF to a readable size.

But if you are deeply reading Tamil literature, probably Google Play Books or KOReader on a tablet will work better. Amazon’s strength is in its large ebookstore and big ecosystem, but for edge cases like these others might do better. And yes, embedding fonts in Calibre might just work for you too.

After I read this thread I tested it with my Kindle Voyage. As already described, you press the top corner of the screen to bring up the black ribbon. Interestingly enough, when you have set your Kindle to ‘every page’ (instead of ‘less often’), the black screen even flashes for a brief moment when setting a bookmark. However, if you have set your Kindle to ‘less often’, the black ribbon just appears – no full screen refresh involved. As a general rule, I prefer not to read PDFs on my Kindle. However, I have found that there are two methods that can make reading PDFs relatively hassle-free. This method is simple, requires access to the original document, but does not introduce any conversion artifacts or change any of the original formatting. The text is simply larger from the start.

For purchased titles I just use the “Cover View” but since the PDF’s don’t have any covers, they just show up as boring old doc icons to me. And I’m done trying to find ways to “organize” them. The process of adding sideloaded titles is it’s own special trip within Amazon’s walled garden, and the existing set of “tools” are really only functional enough to claim existence. And each update seems to bring a fresh round of workarounds falling apart. I spent an entire afternoon following an excruciatingly detailed how-to using a variety of command line tools. Once it worked. Never again.

Nope. You're talking about competing services, each with their own form of Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect the same content that you buy. As an example, you can't watch a Netflix Original on Disney+ for the very same reasons. The book you bought from Google Books is locked to Google's services. Your Kindle is not Google services. Any work-around would involve breaking the DRM for the book which would violate the terms of service which you signed up to (potentially illegal in some jurisdictions too).

I’m pretty much just a reader looking to read my Kindle books on my tablet using the PDF app, so this question really resonates with me. Using screenshots of individual pages would be extremely tedious and likely to be in contravention of copyright laws as well. Instead of breaking the law, I work around it by checking the author’s website for free PDF samples or companion files, buying books in DRM-free ePUB format from retailers like Leanpub, borrowing PDF e-books from libraries that offer them through services like OverDrive, and checking if a classic book is already available in PDF format on sites like Project Gutenberg in various formats. Buying and supporting authors and retailers who sell DRM-free e-books is just one way to encourage authors to continue producing stories for us to read.
