For better or worse, I have a PDF reading workflow for my Kindle that works pretty well. The main issue with PDFs is that they are fixed-layout, so they don’t reflow like you would with an EPUB. This is why I use Calibre, the ebook management powerhouse. I add the PDF to Calibre, export as MOBI or AZW3, and then tweak the output profile to match my Kindle. For comics, manga, or technical documents, I enable ‘heuristic processing’ of the output to try to clean up the layout as much as possible.

The other way I’ve been sending PDFs to Kindle is to use Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” app. It does some reflowing automatically, which isn’t perfect but is decent for documents such as textbooks. I sometimes have to crop the margins of the PDF using Adobe Acrobat before converting, in order to make sure that the resulting eBook has sufficient “white space” around the text in order to avoid having to use very small text. Long documents are usually best read in landscape mode, pinching to zoom as needed, but I try to avoid reading that way for too long.

I have a few “hacks” to get PDFs formatted for reading on the Kindle. First, I use Calibre to convert the PDF to a Kindle-friendly format (such as MOBI or AZW3). I then play with the conversion settings to adjust the margin and font size as necessary. Of course, if I’m too lazy to do this, I can simply email the PDF to my Kindle email address (with “convert” in the subject line) and let Amazon do the work for me. For academic papers, I use “K2PDFopt” which tries to make the best of the PDF’s formatting to avoid the most awkward zooming and scrolling. It’s not perfect but definitely better than reading the PDF as is.

As a general rule, I prefer not to read PDFs on my Kindle. However, I have found that there are two methods that can make reading PDFs relatively hassle-free. The Kindle’s built-in ‘Fit to Screen’ option is sufficient for simple PDFs, such as novels or reports. However, for more complex documents, it is better to convert them to EPUB first using a free online service such as Zamzar and then transfer them to your Kindle using a USB cable.

To read comics and illustrated PDFs, I use ‘Kindle Comic Converter’. It splits up the PDF into readable parts on your Kindle, saving you from having to reduce the font size so much that you can no longer read it properly. Some books even contain beautiful pictures which get preserved very well by this tool. For travel I simply email the PDF to my Kindle under the subject line ‘convert’. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.

How to change text size on Kindle for better reading experience?

3 Answers2025-07-15
The ability to change text size within a book on Kindle is fantastic. Typically I read fiction and non-fiction. I have the text size changed for fiction to a smaller size (3 or 4) to be fully immersive, and for non-fiction to a larger size (5 or 6) for clearer reading. Pairing these adjustments up with other settings such as increasing the font size and utilizing a medium bold font like ‘Amazon Ember’ creates a wonderful reading experience. I prefer to read with medium margins and increased line space between words (1.8) to ensure I don’t find myself jumping from line to line to read. The combination of using Kindle in dark mode with increased text size makes for a late-night reading experience that is easy on the eyes and cozy.

How to fix pdf text size problems when reading on Kindle?

I just make the text larger in the original document before creating a PDF or printing it. If it's a Word document or a web page, I view it at 150% on my computer before printing or saving it to PDF. The resulting file has larger text on the physical page, which then becomes smaller when viewed on the Kindle screen, but is still readable. This method is simple, requires access to the original document, but does not introduce any conversion artifacts or change any of the original formatting. The text is simply larger from the start.

What are the best formats for reading comics on a kindle?

Although convenient, the send-to-kindle service from Amazon’s web site or by email to Kindle_email@amazon.com can re-compress your images so that what looked sharp on your screen will arrive on your Kindle somewhat softened. Although better than that, sending your files via the web site’s send-to-kindle service or by email is still not as good as USB transfer for best image quality because Amazon’s servers will apply additional processing before sending the files to your Kindle. For best quality, thus, send your files to your Kindle by direct connection with a USB cable. Although this approach requires a few extra steps, it is well worth it for those who want to be able to read every line and image detail in sharp, crisp fashion.

How to fix common Kindle book formatting errors?

Ugh, indentation chaos. Some paragraphs are displaying huge tabs, while others appear to have no indentation at all. In some cases, the spaces between words are rendering as little square boxes instead of normal space characters. This sort of problem is a sign that your document was created using a bunch of random space and tab characters as opposed to CSS styles for paragraph indentation. For the reader, it can be a problem to work around, but in most cases toggling the “Publisher Font” on and off will reset the paragraph to its proper formatting. Also, if you change the font size up or down by one notch, the text will reflow to proper indentation in most cases. But, oh, the page will look awful in the meantime. This kind of problem is a sure sign that the author did not hire a professional to format the work, and makes me worry about the quality of the editing as well.

Can I read Kindle format books on other devices?

3 Answers2025-07-13
Reading is supposed to be convenient. My Kindle books give me that. All the reading applications for my phone, tablet or computer for Kindle books are all synced so I always have the latest version of the book I’m reading. This is especially great for me because I tend to forget my Kindle at home but can continue to read during downtime. While I prefer to read Kindle books on Amazon Kindle devices, there are alternatives for reading Kindle books on non-Amazon devices. These include Calibre, which can convert Kindle books to just about any format once you have set up your computer to do so. There are also apps such as PocketBook that can read Kindle books once you have tweaked them to read on that device. Kindle books can be read on just about any device once you have downloaded the app or converted the book to an alternative format.

How to read academic papers on Kindle or other e-readers?

it's a game-changer if you optimize it right. The key is formatting—I always convert PDFs to EPUB using Calibre since Kindle handles reflowable text better. Highlighting and notes sync beautifully with apps like Readwise, which I use to consolidate insights. For dense papers, I adjust the font to Bookerly at size 5 for maximum readability and use the X-Ray feature to track recurring terms. Some journals offer direct EPUB downloads now, which preserve figures and tables cleanly. I also tag papers by topic for quick retrieval later. It’s not perfect—complex equations still get messy—but the portability and search function make it worth it.

What formats can read kindle books on ipad support?

3 Answers2025-08-02
I read my Kindle books on my iPad using the free Kindle app from the App Store. The app supports all of the standard Kindle book file types, including AZW and MOBI as well as PDFs which can be emailled to your Kindle “address” (ie username@kindle.com). It’s all pretty easy to set up and use, and I found that the app made a great little standalone library that I could keep separate from the rest of my e-books. Recently for example I read “Heated Tales: A compilation of steamy stories” and I was able to keep that collection of rather titillating titles separate from the main body of my library.

How to transfer kindle books to kobo without losing formatting?

6 Answers2025-07-04
I use my Kobo as the final destination for my permanent collection of books, such as classics, favorites and reference books. Casual reads that I got through Kindle Unlimited get read on the Kindle app on my phone or on my old Kindle. As a lot of time and hassle would be spent transferring these to my Kobo, they remain in my permanent collection.

How to fix reading epub on mac formatting issues?

9 Answers2025-08-08
Note that problems with DRM can also manifest as formatting issues. I had trouble with a purchased EPUB file (with Adobe DRM protection) lately. Problems seemed to stem from a wonky authorization status of my Adobe ID in the reading app. To verify the status of your Adobe ID, go to Preferences > General in Apple Books and look for the ID in the list. For other reading apps, check the relevant account settings. In extreme cases, a corrupted DRM protection might even prevent opening of the EPUB file. However, in some cases it will open, but with some really ugly styling. The only fix is to download a brand new copy of the book from the store – preferably one that was downloaded in authorized state in the first place. That’s why I try to avoid purchasing DRM-protected EPUBs and instead opt for stores that offer DRM-free versions of many books, like Kobo.
