Reading order? Just grab whatever your library has. I never read them in order as a kid, and it was fine. The early chapters always recap who everyone is and how the club works. The charm is in the familiarity, not some grand serialized plot. Maybe avoid the later 'California Diaries' spin-off until you're really committed—it gets surprisingly heavy. Otherwise, dive in anywhere. I started with 'Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls' and was hooked.

The classic series is pretty straightforward, mostly chronological by publication number. But if you're new, I'd say start with the original 'Kristy's Great Idea' to understand the core four's dynamic. Those first 35 books are the heart of it. After that, the 'Little Sister' spin-offs for Karen Brewer run parallel, and the 'Super Specials' are crossovers that fit best after you know the characters from the main series. There's also the 'Friends Forever' and 'BSC Graphix' graphic novel adaptations, which are fun but cover ground from the early books. Honestly, you can jump around a little; most of the mysteries or summer vacation stories are self-contained.

The real confusion comes with the 2000s re-issues and the newer 'BSC: Claudia and Mean Janine' graphic novels which are more modern takes. For a pure, nostalgic read, publication order is safe. I found a list online that just goes 1, 2, 3... and I think that's the least stressful way to do it. You won't miss any inside jokes.

As a completist, this bothered me until I made a spreadsheet. The main sequence is the 131 original novels, numbered clearly on the covers. Read those 1 through 131. Then, slot in the Super Specials where they fall chronologically—their internal dates usually place them between certain numbered books. The 'Portrait Collection' and 'Mystery' books are side stories that can be read after you finish the core book they feature. The graphic novels adapt early entries, so they're redundant if you've already read #1-4. The 1995 'Babysitters Little Sister' series is a separate, easier thread about Karen; you can read those anytime after meeting her in the main series. It's meticulous, but it preserves all the tiny character developments.

Start with book one. If you like it, keep going in number order. Don't overcomplicate it. The later books reference earlier events sometimes, so order matters a bit for that. The re-issued 'Ann M. Martin's The Baby-Sitters Club' editions are the same stories, just with updated covers.
