I felt 'Daisy Jones & The Six' succeeded where others sometimes fail. It understood the assignment wasn't just to copy the book, but to be a 70s rock documentary. The music had to be legit, and it was. That's the key for adaptations of books centered on artistic expression—you can't just tell us Daisy was a rock star, you have to make us believe it. The series had its own vibe separate from the book, which I respect more than a slavish, boring translation.
I'm skeptical of the 'issue-of-the-week' feeling some adaptations have. Like, this month's pick is about immigration, next month's is about class disparity, etc. It can make the stories feel a bit like they're checking boxes for discourse rather than telling an organic tale. The adaptations sometimes amplify that, making the 'message' feel overly front-and-center. I prefer when the themes emerge naturally from character.
I see a lot of talk about the successful ones, but which adaptations do you think missed the mark? For me, the Netflix movie of 'The Kiss Quotient' (well, 'The Kissing Booth'—different, but it highlights the point) wasn't a Reese pick, but it makes me cautious. When a book's intimacy and internal monologue are its strengths, a surface-level film can feel hollow. I hope they handle 'Eleanor Oliphant' with the care she deserves, because just seeing her quirky actions without the internal pain would be a disaster.

"Sheltered her entire life, Jubilee Thornton yearns to spread her wings and fly after a childhood marked by illness. Her first goal? To attract the attention of the handsome schoolteacher she’s had a crush on for years, Heath DiMarco.
One fateful night, Jubilee throws caution to the wind and kisses Heath—until he pushes her away and tells her they can never be together.
Heartbroken, Jubilee vows to forget Heath and live the life she’s always wanted. In a fit of inspiration, she creates a list of resolutions: to go skinny-dipping, to go on dates, and to finally lose her virginity.
Heath DiMarco moved to the small town of Fair Haven seven years ago to escape the memories of his past. Now a well-respected elementary school teacher, he can’t afford to have a dalliance with the youngest sister of his best friend, no matter how much that single kiss on Halloween night shook his world.
That is until Heath finds Jubilee’s list of risqué resolutions. He can’t bear the thought of her with any man but him.
Yet he knows he can’t have her himself. Instead, Heath decides he’ll vet the men Jubilee wants to date. Jubilee agrees, but only if he teaches her how to flirt—and how to kiss.
He knows he should tell her no, but he can’t resist the temptation she presents.
As desire heats to a roaring flame between them, secrets threaten everything they both hold dear. Unless they untangle themselves from a dangerous web of lies, they will face heartbreak—or be transformed by a passionate love."

Reese Witherspoon's book club has a knack for picking stories that leap off the page and onto the screen. One of my favorites is 'Where the Crawdads Sing'—it’s this hauntingly beautiful tale about a girl growing up alone in the marshes, and the film adaptation captured that eerie, poetic vibe perfectly. Then there’s 'Little Fires Everywhere,' which started as Celeste Ng’s novel and turned into a gripping Hulu series. Reese even starred in it, bringing that suburban tension to life.
Another standout is 'Daisy Jones & The Six,' a fictional rock biography that became an Amazon Prime series. The show’s soundtrack and retro visuals totally nailed the book’s energy. And let’s not forget 'Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine,' though the movie adaptation’s still in the works—I’m already excited to see how they handle Eleanor’s quirky, heartbreaking journey. Reese’s picks just have this cinematic quality, like they’re begging to be filmed.
My book club actually did this as a theme one month: read an Oprah book that was adapted, then watch the film and compare. We chose 'White Oleander.' The discussion was fiery! Half thought the film did an amazing job condensing a sprawling story; half thought it gutted the book's poetic soul. It was one of our best meetings. It really makes you analyze what you value in a story—is it the plot, the characters, the atmosphere, the language? An adaptation forces those priorities to the surface. I'd recommend that to any reading group looking for a lively debate. Pick one from this list and have at it.
The business side is undeniable. An Oprah pick could add millions to a book's sales. For a studio, that's a huge pre-awareness metric. Marketing a film as 'Based on the Oprah Book Club sensation' is a powerful tagline that immediately tells a certain demographic this is for them. It's a brand synergy that's almost unparalleled in publishing and film. Other book clubs exist, but none have that immediate, cross-medium recognition. It turned literary properties into safer commercial bets in an industry terrified of risk.
