It wasn’t any dramatic thunder or wailing, but the steady patter of shoes on the wet sidewalk and the clinging of a small hand in the adult’s. That was it for that section, really. Minimal words, but every facial expression and stray glance was revealing. The continued use of the hands motif – hands fixing and letting go – was so powerful in this section, because in that moment ordinary contact became a lifelong promise. And now when I close this book of stories, I wonder what I would say to that person lost to me if I had but one more cup of tea with them. It’s a warm, achy feeling that lingers.

One of the most impactful lines from the chapter ‘mother’s warmth’ was the scene set in the kitchen for the reunion with the mother. It was so small yet so cinematic with the light from the window filtering through the steam rising from the bowl of soup the mother had made, her hands shaking as she folded the handkerchief, but still able to do so much as she turned to face the protagonist. The dialogue was mostly in pauses but the way the sound design of the clinking of dishes and the refrigerator hum in the background magnified the ordinary events of the reunion and made them feel so sacred. It didn’t have to be stated.

The goodbye scene outside the window is totally opposite in feeling from the kitchen scene: it’s colder and more stark and unfolds in slow motion. There’s the line where the mother says that we have to be brave and then suddenly we’re laughing and then there’s silence. The music disappears and all you can hear is the breathing of the characters. And then there’s the lullaby scene which folds the whole chapter into one embroidered memory. The same melody from earlier pages in the book is there, all frayed and worn out. And the protagonist starts to hum along to it involuntarily. It’s an echoing motif that connects the past to the present and at the same time leaves me feeling strangely buoyant and hollow at the same time. This feeling stays with me long after I’ve read the chapter and I find myself humming the same tune while I’m walking around wearing my winter coat and the smell of soup wafts up from it.
