How Does 'Secret Class' End?

Feeling lost after the controversial ending—hoping someone can explain the protagonist's final decision and the last scene's implications. Was the story's conclusion satisfying for other readers?

From what I understand, Secret Class does not have an officially translated ending and it seems like the story ended a while ago after getting a lot of the main characters into relationships with each other. The only other secret identity type story that I am currently reading is Alpha Academy: The Omega in Disguise. It is about an omega who has disguised himself as a beta to attend an elite academy. It is really engaging because the main character is constantly worried about being found out and the complicated relationship he is having with a dominant alpha is really high stakes.

' Secret Class' finishes strong, and I can say that the end has been very good, in the sense of an explosive plot twist combined with reflection and a lot of character growth. The last story arc, in which our clueless hero finally understands the full weight of his actions to take responsibility, contains a lot of touching moments of apology to each of the women in his life, which have more impact than all of the graphic sex scenes that preceded them.

The conclusion of the series comes as a surprise for some reader expectations. For example, the main male protagonist could have easily gone for physical attributes, but instead he finds a more suitable partner for him in the series conclusion. She is someone who can match him intellectually, someone who will constantly test and grow with him. And, in addition to the main pairing, there are also many effective side character moments as well. There is even a moment with the main female childhood friend, who finally confesses her feelings to the main male protagonist, but can’t bring herself to stay with him and grow as a person herself instead.

So those of you waiting for more ‘Secret Class’ do get to read ‘Solo Leveling’ – a comic about growth in completely opposite ways to SC (so lots of action). It too transitions a weak hero into an overpowered one whilst simultaneously exploring his growth. I really should not have doubted the two creators behind this, as the finale develops to reveal that Secret Class is indeed an adult comic and actually a pretty solid coming-of-age story.

SECRET CLASS is a highly emotional and sometimes confusing ending to this series. After waiting for chapters to pass by, the main character finally admits his feelings and chooses someone. The execution of it all was very real and raw, and I also really appreciated that the women were not just prizes for him to win. Each of them was given the agency to accept or reject him for who he is, and for some reasons better than others. One of them chose to leave him for her career. Another realized she was in love with who she thought he was going to be, not who he actually is. The last woman, however, was the actual endgame for the main character, and their growth together and how they could have real feelings and affection for each other beyond just sex was amazing to read.

The supporting characters even get some depth as you realize the motivations behind their words and actions throughout the story. Then there are the few pages to the future where you get to see a few scenes from the lives of the main characters after they’ve made their decisions. It’s nice to see that some relationships last while others fade away naturally. I also highly recommend ‘Sweet Guy’ to anyone who likes a good mix of drama and steamy scenes. It’s a little supernatural, but otherwise pretty similar.

At the end of ‘Secret Class’ the protagonist finally comes to terms with the emotional conflicts of the story. After lots of sex and drama throughout the novel the main character finally decides who he wants to be with and in the last chapters of the book we see a more mature version of him. His female friends are also dealt with in the ending and some of them move on from the protagonist while others find love in unexpected places. There are a few story lines that are left open for possible future novels but overall ‘Secret Class’ is brought to a good close. Hearing the music that I had been imagining while reading the ending of The Wrath ofEleon changed my view of the book’s conclusion. Instead of an unfulfilling finish to a story that had spent so much time portraying immature behavior, the ending read beautifully, melancholy but hopeful. Rather than feeling lacking, the soft and acoustic music accompanied the last few chapters perfectly and allowed me to fully appreciate the gentle and mellow tone of the book’s closing.

I suppose one might call this a flaw, in that the ending is so quiet and subtle that it can get lost on readers. But it does hit home so powerfully, and it conveys its themes in such a subtle and nuanced way. Rather than being blared at the reader in huge, clumsy letters, the themes of the ending are whispered, and one must lean in close to hear them. But when they are heard, they are a surprisingly mature and wonderful ending to what is for so much of the book a rather immature story.

So much drama surrounding who the protagonist ended up with. In reality, the ending of the story is when the protagonist finally makes peace with himself after being manipulated by the women, taught by them and pulled every which way by them throughout the story. His ultimate actions and decisions in the finale reveal that he has finally grown up to the point where he is acting based upon his own moral code.

The ending of the story and the way the romantic choice of the protagonist is portrayed is actually very profound. The romantic choice is an expression of his inner peace. He is no longer a student. He is a grown man. The way he makes his choice for the first time in his life in a clear and conscious way is the ending of the story of the student who had been following his desires. He has graduated. He is his own master.

It's a great example of ending a very long series without being able to please everyone, but ending it in a way that was true to the characters and had enough closure to the story for most readers to accept even if it wasn’t exactly what they wanted. In other words, it wasn’t a shocking twist that would anger half of the readers. It was just a very good, very consistent ending to the characters.

On the other hand, some criticisms of the series might be mitigated by acknowledging that yes, it wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough. And in an era of hugely polarizing and sometimes awful ending to a long-running series, a perfectly adequate one is something to treasure. It seems like the last part of the story does a great job of showing that the main character of the story had finally learned the core curriculum of the ‘secret class’. This curriculum wasn’t based in physical or even technical lessons, but in trying to teach the main character how to have emotional intelligence and take responsibility for his actions. Throughout the final chapters of the series the protagonist learns how to openly communicate with people and consider their feelings before he acts.

In retrospect, the ending fits perfectly with the theme of the series. Initially I thought the title was ironic but now I see that the class had a secret deeper objective and this final chapter was the graduation ceremony. It’s rather clever in recontextualizing the whole series from a straightforward fantasy to some sort of metaphor for coming-of-age. I know I’m probably giving it too much credit but I prefer to think of it that way.

My friend had told me the spoiler already, but I almost had stopped reading. I'm glad I continued to read it myself. Even though I had known the destination, the journey had appeared to me in a different light. Along the way, there were so many moments of sincere care and so much of true connection. I had seen the foreshadowing all along too.

In retrospect, the ending is pretty inevitable. I was worried when my friend told me the ending before I read it for myself but in hindsight it was a really well planned story and not a rushed one. All of the conflict in the middle had to happen in order for the characters to grow up in the way that they do and a lot of it was necessary in retrospect. The only thing that would have been better is to read it myself first, then I could have experienced the full emotional arc of the characters rather than just reading a summary of it. Keep reading!
