Are The Still Beating Spicy Chapters Worth Reading?

Debating whether to skip to the steamy scenes in "Still Beating," or if the entire dark romance plot deserves a full read-through. Opinions?

For the spice of life: those chapters do deliver what was promised in them. For good Steamy BL Shorts I would point to “Yes Sir:”. Each short is a self-contained, very intense and very hot story, sometimes even unapologetically so. However, because of their directness these stories do have a lot of appeal for people who are looking for immediate tension followed by a satisfying payoff, without a lot of buildup in between.

I was surprised by how much I loved this. The “spice” in this isn’t just there for the sake of it, it’s actually intertwined with psychological insight into the minds of our two damaged characters. The writing is urgent and even in the quieter moments it’s tense. If you’re a fan of dark romances that pushes at the boundaries of what you’re comfortable reading then this is a good choice. Bring tissues though, because it broke me.

I was quite hesitant to read “Still Beating” as I had read so many mixed reviews. But wow. The sex scenes are crucial to the novels as they reveal the characters’ masks. I particularly loved one of the scenes near the end of the novel as it was so captivating and it was the first time that I had seen intimacy be used as a weapon and salvation in such a clever way. Reading this compared to most other romantic novels is like reading about a bonfire – so beautiful and so dangerous but you cannot look away.

I've had to warn for graphic/objectionable content in the spicy chapters of 'Still Beating' but be warned: they hit like a freight train. Emotions are raw and messy and I've loved every minute of them. I think part of the reason the tension between the characters is so persuasive is that the author has constructed the heated moments so that they feel earned and not just thrown in for shock value.

For those who are easily unsettled by morally ambiguous characters and scenarios, Still Beating may leave you feeling uneasy. But for those who enjoy reading stories that are gritty, intense and memorable, Still Beating is well worth the read. The rewards far outweigh the discomfort experienced while reading this powerful and thought-provoking novel.

My view of horror fiction is that it is similar to a haunted house ride. Most people know going in that they are going to get scared and perhaps feel uncomfortable in places, but there is value in experiencing that fear collectively with others and then talking about it afterwards. Many horror stories are considered to be part of a certain rite of passage for those who read online. When reading horror fiction, people expect to get some bragging rights, a shared cultural reference or even a few inside jokes to use amongst friends and online. All of this added value on top of the literary content makes horror “events” of reading that can be worth sitting down to read even if they are not particularly good. So, if you’re reading the story to be part of the conversation online, you should read it all. However, if you’re reading it in isolation for personal enjoyment then you can perhaps skip certain parts or read them very quickly.

These scenes are the point of switch from dark and twisted romance to outright horror. Not everyone can appreciate such a transition and it can be very surprising for readers who expected a more or less moral (gray) love story with some violence. On the other hand, if you are a horror reader who is willing to tolerate some romantic parts, this might finally be where the story goes the way you wanted it to. All in all, the enjoyment of these parts depends on which genre one expects to read. While I was betrayed by the expectations of a romance that I read, my friend finally felt that the story delivered what he expected from a horror story. The transition is a very sensitive issue and it clearly divides the readers.

I actually think these chapters are where the author worked out their darkest thoughts, and then this story is a way to play them out. They read to me like something you’d read in a therapist’s office, and then that writer would be like, “Well, that was cathartic.” They have a raw energy to them. It doesn’t feel to me like the author is trying to be edgy for some market. Instead, I think they’re working through a very bad idea. The fact that it’s being worked through, and it’s being presented to us in this way, is somehow honed in on in such a way that it’s actually worth reading, even if you don’t like it. What’s really compelling is the author’s exploration of their own edge.
