I'd be cautious about sites offering free PDF downloads. A lot of them are sketchy, full of malware, and violate copyright. Suzanne Collins and her publisher deserve to be paid for their work. The library method ensures they were compensated for that copy. Please don't pirate books.

Isn't the whole point of a library? Why is this even a question? Get a card, borrow the book. It's a fundamental public service for this exact reason. Supporting authors is important, but access is too. Libraries pay for their copies, so it's ethical.

What's the best format, anyway? Reading the physical book feels different than the ebook or audiobook. For a fast-paced story like that, I devoured the physical copy. The audiobook is great for the narrator's performance. The ebook is convenient. The free version you'll actually use is the best one.

Moon Called : Werewolf Academy (Book 1)
Erika Lana Bell

On my sixteenth birthday, everything changes. One moment I'm your below-average girl—the next moment, I’m a monster.
A werewolf.
As a danger to society, and with my parents' refusal to help me, I have no other choice but to go to the werewolf place. Nothing prepares me for what waits for me inside the Academy of the Moon.
Not only do I learn that the horrid tales I’d been told about werewolves were not true—but that I am different from the others. This results in my being a scapegoat for condemnation.
What’s even worse is that the boy who marked me might be a murderer. He’s on the loose. Will he come back for me? Am I turning into an evil beast, like him?
And then, there’s Elijah Ledger. The future alpha—a gorgeous werewolf who appears to be bearing dark secrets from everyone. I’m drawn to him. But he’s a magnet for misfortune, and his secrets start to unveil themselves.
While I’m dealing with an array of problems, including a jealous girl who can’t stand my newfound attention from Elijah—one by one, students are getting attacked at the academy. The big question is: who is it? And why are they doing it?
Things get ugly—and I am caught in the middle of it.
Heartbreak is supposed to kill a wolf’s spirit, but Aria Vale refuses to die quietly.
Humiliated before her entire pack when her fated mate publicly rejects her, Aria returns home, shattered and furious, only to find a black envelope waiting on her bed. Inside lies an invitation to a deadly challenge known only as The Game:
“Survive, and win what your heart desires most.”
With nothing left to lose, Aria enters a realm beyond her world, an ancient castle suspended between life and death, where each dawn brings a new trial of survival. Competitors vanish one by one, hunted by the magic that governs the Game.
But not everyone is what they seem. One contestant, a charming, infuriatingly optimistic wolf named Kael, seems more interested in keeping her alive than winning himself. His warmth disarms her, his smiles irritate her, and his secrets could destroy them both.
Now Aria must survive the trials, outsmart the goddess who created them, and decide what freedom truly means: breaking her bond to the mate who betrayed her, or risking everything for the wolf who was never supposed to love her.
Vampire | student x teacher | fated mate
Forbidden love.
Beatrice, a headstrong girl, is just starting her second year of university when a new school coordinator is assigned to the school. She has no interest in risking her future, but her teacher comes in her life in unexpected situations. He seduces her her to no end and ignoring the strange pull she feels towards him is harder and harder to ignore. Little does she know, that from the first time he laid his eyes on her, her world was already changed.
Damon is one of the very lucky ones to find his mate. And he has no intention of letting her go. Whatever it takes. He is adamant to make her his and to protect her from the cruel world he introduced her to. Pasts come surfacing and he finds out she is even more important that he initially thought.
Can she say no to her teacher's obsession? Can he protect her from all evil?
Note: some of the chapters are longer than you're used to.
The Scholarship Girl.
She earned her place.
They remind her every day that she doesn’t belong.
Elora Brown fought her way into St. Jude’s Elite Academy — a world built for money, power, and names that open doors.
Hers does neither.
Then there’s Julian Anderson.
The mayor’s son. The school’s golden boy.
Untouchable… and unbearable.
Their first meeting? He shoved her aside like she was nothing.
The second? He used her brilliance — and dismissed her just as easily.
Elora didn’t come here to make enemies.
But Julian seems determined to be one.
Because in a school where status is everything…
she’s the one person who refuses to bow.
And somehow, that makes her impossible for him to ignore.
But some scholarships come with more than pressure.
This one?
Might come with a war she never signed up for…
and a boy she might not be able to stay away from.
The Academy of The Ascendant - Book 1 Marked by Starlight

She was never meant to survive their world.
Now she’s the only one who can burn it down.
Lyra thought she was just a girl with strange dreams and a birthmark that shimmered beneath moonlight. But when a celestial event rips her from Earth and drops her into the brutal halls of the Academy of the Ascendant, she discovers a deadly truth: she’s the lost heir of a realm that erased her bloodline—and she’s carrying the forbidden magic that could unravel it all.
The Academy is ruled by power and hierarchy. The weak are crushed. The strong ascend. And the Triad—three elite heirs born of elemental fire, storm, and air—will do anything to break her. Until they realize she’s more powerful than all of them.
Mocked. Hunted. Desired.
As Lyra unlocks the four elemental affinities no student should possess, she becomes the center of a prophecy that the Council has killed to keep buried. But it’s the fifth element—the forbidden Void—that marks her for something more.
Survival means mastering her magic.
Love could cost her everything.
And rebellion might just start with a kiss.
Perfect for fans of Zodiac Academy, Throne of Glass, and The Cruel Prince, Marked by Starlight is the explosive first book in a dark fantasy romance series filled with elemental magic, enemies-to-lovers heat, and a heroine who refuses to bow.
I was like the pure and innocent Cinderella of a school romance novel.
Unlike the aristocratic students around me, I didn't come from wealth or privilege. I earned my place at this elite academy through merit alone, my high scores opening the gates to a world far beyond my means.
Cinderella is supposed to be stubborn, proud, and righteous—standing tall despite her humble origins. But I have none of those qualities.
All I have is poverty.
Consider the library's 'reserve' system. If a teacher has assigned the book for a class, they might place all the school's copies on 'course reserve.' This means they can only be used in the library for a few hours at a time, ensuring all students in the class can access it.
It's less convenient for leisurely reading, but it guarantees you'll get a chance to read at least some of it. Ask the librarian if it's on reserve for any current classes.
The economics are fascinating. A district might pay $40 for a hardcover that lasts 5 years, or $25 for a digital license that might last 2 years or 52 checkouts, whichever comes first. Which is the better deal? It depends on circulation.
For a book like 'The Hunger Games' with constant demand, the digital license might 'wear out' faster. The school might need to repurchase it more often than they'd replace a physical copy. So, offering free digital access isn't necessarily cheaper in the long run, which affects how many licenses they buy.
