Levi doing small, practical things for Hanji is my absolute favorite. He never says much, but he'll mend their coat, brew their terrible coffee exactly how they like it, or quietly threaten anyone who disrespects them. It's his love language. Fics that nail that specific, action-oriented care, showing he pays attention to all the little things everyone else misses about Hanji, are just perfect. It feels true to who they are.
I honestly can't get enough of the 'post-canon healing cabin' setup. There's something about the quiet domesticity of it that gets me every time—Levi with his tea rituals, Hanji obsessing over some new specimen while pretending they aren't fussing over his leg, all in a secluded little house. It feels earned after all that trauma. The trope lets them rebuild a life on their own terms, free from military protocol. It's less about epic romance declarations and more about two people who've lost everything recognizing a home in each other.
Another one that gets me is the 'established but secretly pining' dynamic. Like, they've been best friends and comrades for years, it's obvious to everyone else, but they're both too stubborn or emotionally stunted to admit it. I love the little moments of almost-touching or Levi silently cleaning Hanji's glasses without being asked. That slow-burn tension built on a decade of shared history? That's the good stuff right there.
Eh, I know everyone loves the hurt/comfort and domestic fluff, but I'm a sucker for the weird niche AUs. Give me an archaeology professor Hanji and a cynical museum curator Levi bickering over some ancient Titan artifact. Or a cyberpunk setting where Levi's a former corporate enforcer and Hanji's a chaotic data-hacker. Those stories feel fresh because they strip away the original setting's constraints but keep the core dynamic of a meticulous, grounded person trying to manage a brilliant, chaotic whirlwind.
I also think the 'mutual respect as equals' trope is underrated. Fics that focus on them as co-commanders, making difficult strategic choices together, trusting each other's judgment implicitly—that's the heart of their relationship for me. The romance grows naturally from that bedrock of professional admiration, not the other way around.

Calen was a benchwarmer on the university swim team, someone who never actually competed.
The captain, Karl, was everything he wasn’t, a campus golden boy. Three records broken. A new girlfriend every other week.
One night, Calen realized he’d left something behind and went back to the locker room.
That was when he heard it.
Ragged breathing. Strained, barely held back. And beneath it… the slow, awful sound of metal bending under pressure.
He pushed the door open.
Karl stood with his back to him.
His bare muscles writhed beneath his skin, moving wrong, his spine standing out in sharp ridges. His fingers were dug deep into the steel locker, nails tearing through metal, leaving long, brutal gouges. The air was thick with the smell of blood… and something wild. Predatory.
Karl snapped around.
His eyes burned gold in the dark. Blood stained the corner of his mouth, and when he bared his teeth, the canines were far too long. Far too sharp.
He ran.
He barely took two steps before something crashed into him from behind, slamming him to the floor. Karl’s weight pinned him down, his body radiating heat… too hot, almost painful. A low voice brushed his ear.
“You saw something you weren’t meant to see.”
“I won’t say anything….”
Karl lowered his head, his nose grazing his neck as he inhaled slowly, deeply.
“…You smell fucking irresistible.”

Love is something to never be ashamed of, it's okay to fall in love even if that person is someone of the same sex.
That's the way I feel towards the person who showed me how to love.
I love him, I want him and I want to hold him but the problem is... His married.
Leslie Campbell is a young omega who is married to a beta. He is a book enthusiast who became an editor for a successful publishing company and he is assigned to his favorite author, Azrael Mitsuki Bethan, a Japanese American writer who paints the world in white and black.
However, there is one serious problem... Azrael hates omegas especially male omegas.
Leslie is determined to be Azrael's editor but their relationship becomes complicated when forbidden emotions start to develop leaving Leslie in a state to choose between his marriage and his soulmate while Azrael battles with his heart and his conscience.
Heartwarming relationship between the alpha who desires to hate and the omega who knows only how to love.
Funny, I was just talking about this with someone in a server yesterday. Plots that actually gut you are kind of rare because the ship itself can be tricky to write without falling into tired tropes. A lot of the real emotional weight doesn't come from epic, action-driven plots for me; it's in the quieter, almost domestic spaces the show never lets them have. The ones that stick with me are stories where Hanji's scientific drive becomes a form of grief or obsession after the rumbling. Levi's there, not as a knight, but as a static point she orbits around while she tries to make sense of a senseless world. That reversal of their usual dynamic–him being the immovable, broken object of her clinical study–has so much potential for slow, aching connection.
I also keep thinking about this one fic where the premise was just Levi learning to read, taught by Hanji. Sounds simple, but the writer used it to unpack everything about his upbringing and her patience. The emotional depth came from the sheer weight of trust it required from him, and her realizing that teaching him wasn't about information transfer, but about giving him a kind of autonomy he'd never had. It wasn't dramatic, but it felt huge. Those small-scale, character-study plots often hit harder for me than another 'they get captured by Marley' adventure.
Then there's the classic 'survivor's guilt' angle, but done in a way that avoids melodrama. Not just 'oh we're sad our friends are dead,' but exploring how Hanji's manic energy post-timeskip is a direct coping mechanism, and Levi's stoicism is his, and how those two methods of survival either clash or interlock in the quiet moments. A really good writer can make you feel the unsaid things pressing down on every conversation. I guess I'm drawn to fics that treat their relationship like a long, complex negotiation between two different types of damage, rather than a straightforward romance.
I swear I’ve read the same five setups a hundred times and still come back for more. It’s embarrassing, honestly. The AUs are where the real variety is. Coffee shop or florist AUs are everywhere, but they always end up being about Levi finding some strange, violent peace in Eren's intensity. Or the reverse, where Eren calms down because Levi’s stability is the only thing that can contain him.
Then there’s the canon-divergence fics, especially ones where Eren doesn’t go full genocidal maniac. Maybe he and Levi have to go on a long-term undercover mission together, forced proximity leading to that classic grumpy-sunshine dynamic turned up to eleven. The power imbalance is always foregrounded—Captain and Cadet, mentor and protege—but the best ones twist it, making you question who’s really in control.
Omegaverse is its own massive category, almost a default setting for a lot of writers. It codifies the dominance and submission, the raw physicality of their clashes, into a biological framework. Sometimes it feels lazy, but when it’s done well, it explores the tension between Levi’s controlled exterior and Eren’s chaotic, all-consuming nature in a way that plain canon can’t.
The post-rumbling fix-its are a newer trend, a desperate attempt to salvage something from the wreckage. Levi wounded, Eren trapped, both of them dealing with the aftermath. They can be unbearably angsty or surprisingly tender, but the appeal is that shared burden of guilt and survival, a connection no one else could possibly understand.
Lately I’ve been seeing more ‘Dom Levi’ stuff that leans heavily into punishment and care, which honestly fits their dynamic like a glove. It’s less about the physical act and more about the psychological release, the permission to break down.
