I’ve gotten into using Obsidian for notes, so I made a reading tracker there. Each novel gets its own note, linked to a central 'Reading Dashboard' note. I use dataview queries to automatically generate a table showing all novels tagged as #reading, their current chapter, and the date last updated. It’s incredibly powerful and makes me feel like a wizard. I can link to character notes, plot theories, and world-building thoughts right within the same vault. It’s definitely the most involved system here, bordering on a hobby itself. But if you already use Obsidian for world-building or writing, integrating your reading log is a natural extension.

I use the 'Reading List' widget on my iPhone’s home screen. I save the web page of the chapter I’m on to my reading list. The widget shows the saved links, so they’re always visible. When I finish a chapter, I remove that item from the list and save the next chapter. It’s visually clean and integrated into my phone’s OS, which I’m always using anyway. The downside is it’s iOS-specific and not great for managing a huge list. But for keeping track of 5-10 active serials, it’s perfect and requires no extra apps. Tapping the widget opens Safari directly to the page.

Honestly, I just subscribe to the author’s Patreon or Discord for the novels I truly care about. In the update announcements, I’m reminded of the story, and I just read the new chapter. For everything else, if I forget it, it wasn’t important. This is a paid solution in some cases, but it’s also a community-based one. Being in a Discord where people are talking about the latest chapter is the best reminder and progress tracker of all. You’re not just tracking your own progress; you’re participating in the story’s release cycle. It turns tracking from a solitary admin task into a social activity.

How can I track my progress when reading English novels online?

I don't. It sounds counterproductive, but not tracking takes the pressure off. I read for enjoyment, not for stats. If I forget where I was in a story, I just skim the last few pages until it clicks. Sometimes starting a chapter over isn't a bad thing. The story finds me again when I'm meant to be reading it. Life's too short for spreadsheets about hobbies.

How can I track my reading progress across different free book sites?

I've started using a habit-tracking app, 'Loop Habit Tracker'. I added a habit called 'Update Reading Log'. Each day I read, I check it off and in the note for that day, I jot down what I read. It's more about building the logging habit than creating a searchable database, but it keeps me consistent.

Where can I track my progress while reading a long novel online?

I just leave 50 browser tabs open. Each tab is a chapter I haven't read yet. My progress is measured by how much my computer's fan is screaming. Would not recommend this method from a technical standpoint, but from a chaotic, 'to-be-read pile' aesthetic, it's unmatched.

How do free online book apps help track your reading progress?

Accessibility features tied to tracking are huge. For example, an app that tracks your progress might also offer text-to-speech, and it will remember where the synthesized voice stopped. It can link your progress to custom fonts or background colors for dyslexia. For people with print disabilities, the digital tracking isn't separate from the reading experience; it's integrated into the very tools that make reading possible. The 'progress' is therefore tracked across a customized, accessible interface that a physical book could never provide. In this case, the help is profound and transformative, enabling reading where it might otherwise be difficult or impossible.

How can I track updates for ongoing free novels I read online?

I keep a physical notebook. A small, cheap one. Each page is a novel. I write the title, website, and then just a list of dates with chapter numbers next to them as I read. There's something satisfying about the pen-on-paper record. It's offline, it never has sync issues, and flipping through it feels like a log of my reading journey. It also forces me to be selective—if I'm not committed enough to write it down, I probably shouldn't start it. Highly analog, highly effective for me.
