I don't. It sounds counterproductive, but not tracking takes the pressure off. I read for enjoyment, not for stats. If I forget where I was in a story, I just skim the last few pages until it clicks. Sometimes starting a chapter over isn't a bad thing. The story finds me again when I'm meant to be reading it. Life's too short for spreadsheets about hobbies.

I don't track the middle, only the start and finish. I have a note where I write the date I started a book and the date I finished it. The in-between is a mystery. This works because I rarely read more than one fiction book at a time. The blank space between dates represents the journey.

I use the notes app on my phone and keep a running list. It's just the title and the last chapter number, like 'Project Hail Mary - Ch. 12'. Brutally simple. When I finish the book, I add a star and the date. Looking back at that list from a year ago gives me a real sense of accomplishment, like a hiking trail logbook.

I have a 'book club' with myself in a journaling app like Day One. Each book gets an entry. I write a few lines as a diary from the perspective of a character or just my thoughts as a reader after each sitting. The date stamps on the entries create a natural timeline of my progress through the story.

Honestly? The back button and a lot of scrolling. I'll often just re-read the last few paragraphs of the previous chapter to jog my memory. It's not efficient, but it re-immerses me in the prose and style before diving into new material. The 'tracking' is just my own flawed memory, which feels oddly organic.

How can I track my reading progress for free novels online?

I use the 'Reading List' widget on my iPhone’s home screen. I save the web page of the chapter I’m on to my reading list. The widget shows the saved links, so they’re always visible. When I finish a chapter, I remove that item from the list and save the next chapter. It’s visually clean and integrated into my phone’s OS, which I’m always using anyway. The downside is it’s iOS-specific and not great for managing a huge list. But for keeping track of 5-10 active serials, it’s perfect and requires no extra apps. Tapping the widget opens Safari directly to the page.

Where can I track my progress while reading a long novel online?

I just leave 50 browser tabs open. Each tab is a chapter I haven't read yet. My progress is measured by how much my computer's fan is screaming. Would not recommend this method from a technical standpoint, but from a chaotic, 'to-be-read pile' aesthetic, it's unmatched.

How to track progress while reading a books online across devices?

I’ve found that syncing progress across platforms is a game-changer. My go-to method is using apps like 'Goodreads' or 'StoryGraph,' which let you manually update your progress and sync it seamlessly. Kindle’s Whispersync is another lifesaver—it automatically saves your page or percentage across devices, so you can pick up right where you left off. For web-based reading, browser extensions like 'Reading List' or 'Pocket' save articles and track your position. I also love 'Google Play Books' for its cloud sync feature, which works flawlessly between my phone and tablet. If you’re into manga or comics, 'Manga Plus' or 'Comixology' offer similar tracking. The key is sticking to one ecosystem—whether it’s Amazon, Google, or a dedicated app—to avoid fragmentation.
