Another simple transfer of downloaded novels from my Mac is to connect the Kindle to the Mac using a USB cable. The Kindle appears as an external drive on the Mac. I drag and drop the downloaded e-book novel(s) in EPUB or MOBI format into the 'Documents' folder on the Kindle. If the novel was not downloaded in a suitable e-book format, I use Calibre (free e-book management software) to convert it to the appropriate format, and then drag and drop the newly converted e-book file into the 'Documents' folder on the Kindle. I then safely eject the Kindle and the newly transferred e-book(s) are added to my Kindle e-book library.

The email route is also another way to get books onto your Kindle. This involves emailing the book to the kindle email address associated with your Amazon account. You can find the email address of your Kindle in ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’ on Amazon. This method is very handy for times when you have not got a USB cable to hand. Make sure you include ‘convert’ in the subject line if the book needs any formatting.

Most of my novels get transferred to my Kindle from my Mac on a weekly basis. The most straightforward way to do this is via USB. You just connect the Kindle to your Mac, open up the Kindle’s ‘Documents’ folder, and dump your novels in there. If a novel is a non-MOBI PDF or some other format, I use Calibre to convert it to MOBI in a flash. Calibre is free and very easy to use – just add your novel, choose your output format, and export it to your Kindle.

Emailing your Kindle is another great way to wirelessly send novels. All of your Kindles are listed on the Manage Your Content and Devices page of your Amazon account. Click on the email address associated with each Kindle and attach the novel you want to send to it. Type “convert” in the subject line of the email if you are sending a novel that is not already in MOBI or PDF format. There is also a “Send to Kindle” app available for Macs that allows you to drag and drop the novels you want to send to your Kindle and the app will automatically convert them for you.

I use Dropbox too. When I’m reading a book on my iPad and I get a chance to sit at my Mac, I upload the file to my Dropbox account, open the book on my Mac, and share it with my Kindle from the ‘Share’ menu. This method is really cool if you have multiple devices. Make sure the book is in the correct format for your Kindle before you send it though.

I’ve tried to make the transfer of downloaded novels on my Mac as easy as possible. To transfer books via USB for example, I connect my Kindle to the Mac, open Finder, and drag the books to the “Documents” folder on the Kindle. Some file types aren’t compatible with the Kindle, however. I use Calibre to convert these ebook files to MOBI or AZW3. First, I add the ebook to Calibre, then select the output file type and click on “Convert books”. The converted ebook can then be transferred to the Kindle via USB or by email.

My preferred method of wireless transfer is by email, using the email address registered to your Kindle in the Amazon account settings for your Kindle. The file to be sent is attached to the email, and the book is synced wirelessly to your Kindle. Most files are already in the correct format to be loaded onto a Kindle, but if not, adding the word ‘convert’ in the subject line usually does the trick. For bulk loads of books, I use Amazon’s ‘Send to Kindle’ app which can handle the conversion of the files for you and can even handle multiple files at once.

In general, wireless methods like email or 'Send to Kindle' are a lot easier and faster for single transfers. However, USB is usually faster for large collections of books. For the more technically inclined, there are also programs available like Kindle Comic Converter which can also convert other kinds of books like manga or graphic novels. Just remember to always safely 'eject' your Kindle when done to prevent any kind of file corruption.

This is super simple to do. Just Google ‘DeDRM tools Calibre’ and the first result should be a GitHub page for the plugin. Click to install and follow the instructions. I’m familiar with this problem and it’s not made easy by Amazon but it is possible. The first thing I tried for this problem was the Family Library feature for sharing books between other accounts in your household. This is set up in the Amazon account holder’s settings for Amazon under ‘Amazon Household’. Once you have set up your other account(s) as part of your Amazon Household you can then add books to share in ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’. No – that won't work (although that feature would be lovely for non-families too). In that case you need to remove the DRM protection. I use Calibre e-book management software with the DeDRM plugin to remove Amazon DRM protection from downloaded books, which can then be converted to whatever format is required to transfer the e-book to the other Amazon account holder by email or USB. There are plenty of online tutorials to guide you through removing Amazon DRM using Calibre.
