H3PO4
At my birthday party, I had a sudden heart attack.
I frantically shook out my emergency heart pills, but the moment one hit my tongue, a strong fishy, rotten stench shot straight up my nose.
It was a nasty-flavored jelly bean.
I choked and gagged as the pain in my chest grew worse.
Beside me, my sister was doubled over with laughter, holding up her phone to film me in my sorry state.
"Ivy, do you like my birthday present?
"You look so ridiculous like this. I'm definitely playing this video at your wedding."
I collapsed to the floor, my heart hurting so badly I could barely breathe, struggling and begging for help.
But my mother, who was cutting the cake, just glanced at me and frowned.
"Enough, Ivy. It's just a joke. Stop lying on the floor throwing a fit."
My father was busy taking pictures of my sister. He didn't even turn around.
"Ivy, quit the act. After cake, we're going to watch the fireworks show."
Ever since my sister was adopted, the whole family had revolved around her nonstop.
Even when I wanted just a little attention from my family, they thought I was only competing with her for it.
The overwhelming feeling that I was dying gave me one last burst of strength, and I grabbed my fiancé Adrian's ankle with everything I had.
He'd been responsible for protecting me ever since he joined the Family. He would save me. He had to.
But Adrian just pried my hand away, his voice gentle but tinged with impatience.
"Ivy, even a tantrum has its limits.
"You're grabbing me so hard. You don't look like someone having an attack at all."
They sat around the dining table, happily sharing the cake.
In a corner where no one paid me any mind, I slowly lost consciousness and sank into darkness forever.
A few minutes later, Adrian came over with a smile and called to me.
"Come on, Ivy. Your favorite fireworks show is about to start."
But this time, I would never watch the fireworks with them again.
