My husband's eighth lover was pregnant.
The Corvino family had waited years for an heir, and at last one was on the way. My mother-in-law, Olivia Corvino, the family's Donna, was overjoyed. My husband, Dante Corvino, put up a hundred million dollars for the baby on the spot.
But the woman merely lifted her chin, looking down on us all.
"I placed first on this year's written exam for an assistant U.S. attorney position. I'm going to Washington to make a name for myself. I won't let a child hold me back.
"And I won't be the mob's broodmare. This baby has to go."
Olivia nearly fainted with rage. Dante turned livid and crushed the whiskey glass in his hand.
I sat at the far end of the table, barely daring to breathe.
Then, out of nowhere, a tiny voice started grumbling in my head.
[God set me up! He promised I'd come down and bring this family another 100 years of glory. So why'd he pick this idiot to be my mom?]
[I carry all of heaven's luck, and my so-called daddy is destined never to have kids. If he misses out on me, the Corvino family's glory is gone for good!]
[She doesn't want me? I'll just find a mom who knows a good thing when she sees it, and I'll still get born!]
I jumped at the chance and blurted, "I know a good thing! Come into Mommy's tummy, quick!"
Every eye in the room locked onto me.
Dante strode over, his face dark.
"Cecilia, what are you talking about?"
Thinking fast, I grabbed his hand, pressed it to my flat stomach, and gave him a dazzling smile.
"Honey, what I mean is... I'm pregnant too."
