I turned around and saw a black escalade pass the car behind us and come in behind us. "Who was that?" "It was Brodie. He forgot to tell me something is all." The coastal road south of Cliff's End runs a long, gradual descent for about a mile before it curves a wide, well-banked turn that presents no particular challenge at normal speed. I had ridden it four times since arriving. I knew the road. I left early, before the garage was properly awake.

He promised himself that there would be hell to pay when he did. Speeding his truck around the curve of the farm road, Dustin didn’t take his foot from the pedal when he saw the police blockade up ahead. He honked, cruising on through, knowing that Curtis would have been too smart to take the obvious path. Taking another turn in the road, he came out on a road used mainly by tractors and other slow-moving machinery. It was a dangerous road because it wasn’t well-paved, and the meandering curves met the busy main road all at once in a dizzying array of traffic.

The car came around the corner of the wooded road at speed. The headlights illuminated the greens and browns of the trees and shrubs as they blurred past. The curved mountain road was not one that the locals drove quickly on, with the steep embankments and tight switchbacks the road had claimed many lives over the years. Two more vehicles followed the first up and around the next 180 degree turn. The two SUVs now side by side on the narrow road moved closer to the first car.
