Breaking down every crutch of science and logic that I have used to keep me going during my hard times. Sterling is a freaking ghost! A ghost! Like-how does that even happen? How does one become a ghost? Forgive me, I’m not as educated as I was as a little kid about these matters. I didn’t want to believe him, but seeing what he did last night convinced me otherwise. Often uncompleted tasks that are near to the heart can make a ghost remain behind." Sassafras sighed. "You could have just told us."

I reached out and pressed the radio button on the steering wheel. My voice was cold, cutting through the static. "Mason Vale, do you see a ghost in your mirror?" I said coldly into the radio. Those words pierced straight through Mason's last line of composure. His car hesitated for an obvious instant on the straight. Now. I smashed the throttle down. The car tore through the air and pulled alongside him. Ahead was a chain of fast S-curves. Seeing that I was about to pass, a vicious look flashed through Mason's eyes.

The possessive way he fucked me like he both hated and needed me. I forced a grin. “You’re crazy, man. You watch too many movies.” He stepped aside but whispered as I passed, “Run while you still can. He’ll ruin you.” Later that day, I overheard two employees gossiping near the cafeteria. “Did you hear about The Ghost? Some billionaire who shows up masked at underground parties. Pays good money, fucks like a demon, then vanishes. Nobody ever sees his face.” I laughed it off again. But deep inside of me, i was worried for myself.

I lied. “Are you sure?” “Of course. Why?” “Because… are you saying it’s never happened before?” “Yes,” I said quickly, then added, “Or do you have some kind of idea about what it was?” “I am not sure,” she said slowly, voice dropping, “but it felt like there was a ghost in the house.” I froze. A ghost? I raised an eyebrow, pretending to be surprised. “A ghost? Did someone die in this house?” There was a pause... too long. Then she blurted, “Yes... no...I mean, maybe.”

A cold dread, sharper than the chill in the air, shot up from the soles of my feet. The patch of shadow in the corner began to writhe unnaturally, coalescing into a denser form. A human silhouette, darker than the darkness around it, slowly detached itself from the wall. It was tall and gaunt, its entire form wreathed in an impenetrable, smoky blackness. The air grew still and heavy, as if the room itself was holding its breath. Then, a voice, cold and utterly devoid of emotion, sounded not in my ears, but directly in my mind.
