“It’s for the wolves who make it possible for it to exist at all. For the people who truly keep the purpose of the gala in mind, and don’t see it as an opportunity to flaunt their wealth or affirm their status.”
He was silent for a moment. His gaze remained on me, not judgemental, only attentive.
“And do you think they’ll see it that way? Do you think they’ll still donate to the cause it’s meant for?” he asked softly. “I hope so,” I said. “If I do my job well — if everything fits — then maybe they will.”
A faint smile appeared on his lips, without mockery. “Then I was wrong, and maybe you are the right wolf for this assignment.”
