Sherryl Rain kept her head low, focusing on the lesson, even though she knew how rare it was for someone of Grace’s status to take the time to educate a mere servant. Most high-ranking figures in the Cross Empire saw little value in teaching those beneath them. Grace glanced at the worn parchment in front of her before turning her cold gaze to Sherryl, the little mouse that belonged to Dallion. “We’ll stop here for today,” Grace decided, stretching as she closed the book. “I need to take my mother and sister out to the Valley. Would you like to come?” The offer sounded casual, but Sherryl could hear the subtle test in it. “Ever been there before?”

Rif put his hands on his hips and looked around. “You know how smart Grace is.” Vincent started. He waited until Rif nodded in understanding before continuing on. “Years ago, Grace was messing around on a computer designing program. I had seen what she had accomplished and decided to patent it. It is now a global program that has made her a millionaire.” Rif looked taken aback. “Grace is a millionaire?” “Technically, it is almost to billionaire status, but who the fuck is keeping track?” Rolling my eyes, I just kept listening to the shit show.

“You sound like my mother. She used to say the same thing.” I leaned forward instead. “I need your help, Grace. I wouldn’t have come otherwise. I know you’ve got your hands full with Tina. She’s amazing, by the way. Smart, funny.” She looked hesitant but eventually nodded, She’s my heart, Grace wrote. Then she tapped her pen on the pad, waiting for me to continue. “I need information. About them, about the Valdez family. Anything you can give me.” I told her about the “accident” and my suspicions. I left out the miscarriage part. It is too much of a sore spot for me to say now.
