A Grief Observed Novels & Stories

Richard I stood in the midst of death and grief, surrounded by the heavy silence that only tragedy can bring. Everywhere my eyes land, there is the corpse of my people, with their loved ones grieving for their loss. Their anguished cries pierced the air, echoing the magnitude of the devastation that had befallen us. Each life lost represented a shattered dream, a void that could never be filled.

"So, this is where the ketchup went? How dare you waste it just to put on a show!" He reached out to wipe it off, but the instant his fingers brushed my skin, he screamed in horror because I was ice-cold. His hand trembled violently as he pointed at me, his voice shaking. "She's… Dead. She's really dead!" Edwin's breath caught, his chest tightening as he stared at my lifeless body in disbelief. Mom wailed, nearly fainting. For the first time, I saw genuine fear etched into their faces. But she didn't dare take a step closer as maggots had already begun to crawl from beneath my clothing.

"What a shame. You couldn't even manage to step on a trap or fall into a pit?" He didn't yell. Just stared at me, eyes red. "I finally get it now... how scared and helpless you and Luca must've felt." I laughed coldly and walked out. No—he didn't get it. He only knew the pain of being cold and alone. Not what it felt like to hold my dying son in my arms, screaming into the silence. After he got discharged, Fabian went quiet. Then one day, I threw a 20-pound sandbag at him.

Something about the way she held herself, something about the shape of her mouth. Ah, yes. Grief. How unusual. She was a woman born of grief, and yet somehow she was breaking under the weight of it. It was a lovely thing to see, actually, like the branches of a tree snapping under an ice storm, a sort of beauty in the pale horror of the event, but at the same time, he didn’t enjoy seeing her suffer. She moved him in a way he hadn’t often been moved. It was like watching a ghost fade away after you had just grown accustomed to it. It was a difficult thing.

"Yeah, I get it. Grief can make you feel a million things at once." Hearing Edmund talk about grief was like listening to McDonald's talking about Barbie dolls. It just didn't mix. People like Edmund knew next to nothing about grief. The whole world revolves around them, at least in their heads. If anybody died, it didn't matter to them. So, how the hell could he relate to her own grief? Or was that pity speaking?

His eyes, usually so guarded, were pools of unspoken grief, reflecting the dim light of the stars above us. I watched him, feeling a deep sense of pity and empathy. His pain was palpable, and it mirrored my own in a way that was almost surreal. “I’m sorry about that,” I said softly, my voice barely more than a whisper, hoping to offer some small comfort. The words felt inadequate, mere whispers in the face of such profound loss.

With a champagne glass and a crowd of two hundred people and a cold, small smile from my twin sister across the applause. I let myself feel that. I let it be as large as it actually was, which was very large. Grief for a thing you had for thirty seconds and lost before you could name it was its own specific register of grief, different from losing something you had held for years. Sharper. Lighter. Like a cut that was small but very clean.

David held Emma tightly, her frail body trembling as they both knelt on the cold, sterile floor. The air was thick with grief and her sobs echoed through the room, piercing the heavy silence like a blade. Avery remained where she had collapsed, hands shaking as she tried to process what had just happened. She had never seen anyone die before, never witnessed life slipping away in such a raw, unforgiving way. It was weighing down on her and crushing her spirit. All she could feel was an overwhelming wave of sorrow. Emma’s quiet cries filled the space, and the heavy burden of David’s grief was evident. Her heart ached for the man who had just lost his father—and for the woman who had lost her

What remained consistent was the feeling it produced. Not the cold dread of void energy. Not the consuming hunger that had defined every encounter with void creatures and void gods that I had experienced in twenty years. This was something that sat at the base of the throat and behind the eyes and that I had to think about carefully before I could name it accurately. Grief. Ancient, bottomless, patient grief. Selene heard me arrive without turning her head. “It has been standing there for eleven minutes,” she said quietly, as though speaking at normal volume might disturb something fragile. “It has not moved. It has not done anything. It is just there.”

assistant"> Something shifts across her face so suddenly that it almost startles me more than the screaming rage from before. I recognize it instantly. Grief. Not the kind that breaks apart quietly. The kind that twists itself into obsession because it has nowhere else to go. The kind that keeps reaching for something long after it is already gone. Her eyes stay fixed on Caleb, and for one strange second she looks exhausted beneath all the madness. Like she has spent so long chasing this fantasy that she no longer remembers who she was before it.
