Paying Me with His Life
On the day Leonard was executed, I received the highest honor in my field—the Excellence in Biology Award.
During the press conference, the reporters asked, "Ms. Quinton, we heard you're still unmarried. Did your last relationship disappoint you?
"Do you plan to marry in the future?"
I smiled and shook my head. Love and marriage were no longer things I needed in my life.
"I will never marry again," I said. "I will dedicate my life to fulfilling my promise."
The reporters leaned in eagerly. "And what is your promise?"
"To use my strength, however small, to save more lives and help more children find happiness again."
