"Why do you think it's normal to be happy at my situation? You know what, you should enjoy swimming in your stupidity while you still have it. Mark my words, I will get my parent's inheritance, everything I own, back from you and watch you reap the consequences of your actions." ‎His eyebrows suddenly drew towards one another as he approached me and took my hands, feigning sadness. "But Allie, you know I was the only one who stood by you on that unfortunate day. Everyone else left, only I didn't, and this is how you repay me? Really?" ‎

“Lie again. There’s no overtime pay on any of your pay stubs.” I tapped on the message, and the chat with Mark Lewis popped up. Yesterday had been Sunday. [Claire, Ben and Lily want sautéed lettuce. Can you teach me how to make it?] She had replied within seconds. [Mark, I’ll come over and make it for them. You’re not good in the kitchen. You might burn yourself.] I kept scrolling. There were records from almost every weekend morning before that. [Claire, I want to buy Lily some underwear. Do you think this color looks nice?

"Penelope, I'm sorry… I'm so, so sorry…" Mom buried her face in the crook of my neck, crying her heart out, her voice filled with regret and despair. "I was wrong. It's all my fault! Wake up and look at me, please! You can yell at me or hit me—I'll take it all. Just don't scare me like this, please! "Wake up. We'll go home, and I'll make you all your favorite food. I'll buy you everything you like. I'll stop playing favorites; I'll never neglect you again…"

But back then, my leg wasn't scarred, and I was forced to suffer humiliation every single day. Now, I no longer needed to put up with that. I was independent and making my own money. On my first day, she gave me a quick once-over and said, "Lunch is included. There's meat." I thanked her. The comments said Cara was a good person and that I'd lucked out. I hadn't lucked out. "So what did Darin say?" he inquired. He promised to pay compensation, issue a public apology online, and do me a favor. He won't refuse me if I ever need anything from him. "It was no small matter to get a favor from someone like Darin. A chilly grin formed on Felicia's lips. Andrea is really fortunate, I must say.

"I don't care who is bonded to who. I care about staying alive and getting paid." She measured powder into a small pouch. "That doesn't mean I don't know what's happening." "You don't seem hostile." "I'm not." She tied the pouch loosely. "I'm factual." She named a price. I paid it. Jane counted the money before putting it away. "Good. At least one person around here understands that favors aren't free." "Is that what this is?" "No. This is a transaction." She handed me the pouch. "Favors are more expensive."
