The long version included things I had said to her in the corridor, things that had happened in the room, and things I had watched on the screen, which I had no right to feel but felt anyway. He genuinely has the ability to sit in silence and wait for the world to catch up to him and I have found this quality irritating and reassuring in turns over four months and right now lying in his destroyed bed I find it the most steadying thing in the room.
