Perjalanan ke Batavia menjadi awal pertemuan Kyai Rangga dengan Jampang, Untung Suropati, Sakerah, Sarip Tambakoso, bahkan dengan Badra Mandrawata atau si buta dari gua hantu. Di tengah jalan, di tempat yang jauh dari keramaian, rombongan Kyai Rangga bertemu dengan pasukan VOC dan pasukan mayat hidup, sehingga terjadi pertempuran yang hebat, tanpa pemenang. Ternyata rombongan pasukan VOC itu menyimpan harta karun di sebuah gua. Kyai Rangga yang mengetahu hal itu memutuskan untuk meninggalkan tempat itu untuk melanjutkan tugasnya mengirim surat ke Batavia, dengan pikiran akan kembali setelah tugasnya selesai.
