The opponent pulled twice—Kai blocked the first, overextended on the second—and that old, familiar fire in his chest flared up in an instant.
“Red!” Aria’s voice cracked across the sound, but the brake was too late; the body moved before the word could land.
Kai drifted two steps toward the ropes, caught a glimpse of the man leaning toward Aria again, and the half-sentence—“How long can you take it, sweetheart?”—split the air like a draft slamming through a poorly closed door. Kai stepped to the rope, turned halfway, and, not by plan but by reflex, threw a single clean right—no showy arc, no excess, just a timed, chin-planted punch.
