During my rampage of a small bookshelf on the wall next to the bed, I find classic books such as, The Catcher in the Rye, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and so on. Spotting amongst the classics a leather bound book with no title or author. I slowly open it and inside handwritten pages are revealed. May 12th 1998

I wandered through the aisles, running my fingers along the spines, feeling a sense of belonging I hadn't felt in a long time. I spent the whole day there, completely lost among the books, reading story after story until I lost track of time. One book caught my attention "The Adventures of Sir Flufftail" a ridiculous but absolutely hilarious story about a brave and very dramatic rabbit knight who went on quests to save stolen carrot cakes from mischievous squirrels.

That was a relief at least I had a few days where I didn't do ninja moves at home as well as at school. I just looked around the entire study room and just now noticed that it was still very spacious. It's like a library with so many books there. There are also many huge bookshelves lined up and there is also a wooden ladder for the high parts of the bookshelves. I was tempted to look at the books there. They are all thick and they are in alphabetical order. They are all about politics, government rules, history, weaponry, and even spells and incantations. I snorted. The peg is just like Harry Potter, isn't it? But so far I haven't seen anyone doing magic or riding a broomstick.

Just the soft rustle of pages and the comforting scent of old books. Only in stories, he thought, could he travel across oceans, through time, into the hearts of strangers without moving an inch, without lifting a finger. It was within ink and parchment that he found the most vivid adventures. Adventures that never asked him to sacrifice his stillness in exchange for wonder. And so, with his limbs weary but his mind slowly awakening, Arnav reached for a book. The kind of book that didn’t just pass the time, but gently stitched a man back together.

We were both excited about the trip, about Paris, about the adventures that awaited us over the next ten weeks. We were to visit the Louvre the next morning and eagerly discussed the treasures we'd soon see in person.

His mouth formed an ‘O’ as he processed the information. “But it’s nothing like holding a book in your hand and getting lost in an adventure or romance novel.” I joked. “Oh, I have a few books if you want to pick some out and take them with you. For the journey.” “Really? That would be great!” I clapped my hands together in excitement about what new tales I could delve into. I ended up picking out three books. One was about a treasure hunt, the second was a collection of romance stories from around the realm based on Alpha’s finding their mates, and the third was based on historical figures and their relationships to their gods.

"No. It's fine. Take it. And when you're done, come back and pick another one. Or stay here and read if you prefer." "Thank you." "Why do you like these kinds of books?" He handed it back to me. I thought about lying but something about the way he was looking at me made me want to tell the truth. Or at least part of it. "I like stories where people choose their own path. Where they're not trapped by circumstances or fate. Where they get to decide who they want to be." He studied me for a long moment. "What other kinds of books do you like?" "History. Adventure. Mysteries. Anything really."

“Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.” We fell into silence. The only sound was distant thunder rumbling above ground. I wondered how long we’d be down here. Minutes stretched. My mind wandered to how close he was. How alone we were. “Tell me something,” I said finally. “Why’d you become a librarian? You don’t seem like the type who likes being stuck behind a desk all day.” Mr. Kane exhaled softly. “Books don’t talk back. They don’t expect small talk. I like the order. And the stories. What about you? History major with a focus on obscure trade? That’s not common.”
