"It's over," Lorenzo said, his voice firm. He looked at her, then at me. "The war is over."
We left the safe house that afternoon. The police detail remained, a precaution, but the atmosphere was different. The siege was lifted. The apartment felt both familiar and strange when we walked in. It was ours again. The sun streamed through the windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Life, ordinary life, waiting to be resumed.
The first week was… quiet. We slept late. We cooked meals that weren't just fuel. We watched terrible movies on the sofa. We didn't talk about the Admiral, or Katerina, or fraud, or murder. We talked about nothing. It was glorious.
