I scrambled off the couch, limbs stiff and sore, and rushed to the bathroom. I splashed cold water on my face, scrubbing at my skin as if I could wash away the feeling of Caden’s touch, his mouth, the shame that clung to me. A shower felt impossible, too much time, too much thought. I just needed to look normal, to disappear. My reflection stared back, eyes wide and hollow, dark circles underneath them. I looked like a ghost.
"Maeve? Sweetie? Are you up?" Mom's voice, raspy from her cough, came from the hallway.
