She hadn’t changed much because I could tell right away it was her. On the following pages, I saw pictures of Ashton and his siblings together with their parents when they went to Japan. Everyone wore warm smiles, making the family portrait seem filled with warmth and togetherness, as though all happiness had gathered within that single painting. I listened to their explanation in silence, but something slowly began to change before my eyes.

Victoria looked through them, her heart full. "This one," she said, holding up a photo. "This is the one." The photo showed the whole family—forty-two people, spanning five generations. Victoria and Nathaniel in the center, their children around them, their grandchildren at their feet. Patricia in her chair, her hand on Daniel's shoulder. Everyone smiling.
