Hanging up, I came to the living room. Avis was sketching at the coffee table with tongue sticking out with concentration. Scattered crayons.
She raised her eyes as I sat next to her. “I made us.” I smiled and it was the first time of the day when it was real. She had drawn on the paper two stick figures, one tall, one short, with hands together, under a bright yellow sun. There was another figure in the corner, smaller, yet, a little baby with curly lines upon its head.
