She said I looked a lot like the animated character. Cindy, my mom's best friend, snuck me a book about the movie. For weeks I read it at night after my parents tucked me in. I knew the characters' names by heart. Another snap of Laeddin's fingers and the tiger, the genie, the monkey and the boy from the market appeared on the shelf next to Jasmine.

Only one thing would give her some peace in that house. She rolled around and took out a book from underneath her pillow. It was her favorite book, ‘The Adventures of the Mermaid’. Her dad had gifted her this book last year and since then, Alina became obsessed with the lore of mermaids. The book followed the story of a mermaid who was travelling all the seas in search of her pearl. On the way, she made many friends and even defeated monsters to achieve her goal. The mermaid in the book was named Alya and she became Alina’s heroine.

"It is the only thing that can save this realm from darkness." Sophia's eyes widened with understanding. "And if we fail?" The figure's voice grew somber. "Then this realm will be plunged into eternal shadow, and all hope will be lost."

I had lots of questions on my mind. I had a plan. I had found an ancient, forbidden spell, passed down from generations of Alphas, a spell once used to tame the most powerful of beasts. It was a risky gamble, a dance with the shadows, but it was my only hope at that point. The spell required me to journey to the heart of the Whispering Woods, a place known as the Shadow Falls.
