“Step back, Alpha!”
Elara, the white-haired witch, stepped into the clearing. She wasn't carrying a crystal this time; she was carrying a staff made of twisted, ancient iron. She slammed the staff into the ground, and a wave of pure, white fire rippled across the sand, freezing the obsidian vortex in place.
The boy let out a shriek and released Ellie’s wrist, collapsing back into the sand. The shadow-hand vanished, dropping Roman to the ground.
Elara walked to the boy, her expression one of profound pity. She touched his forehead, and the silver lines on his skin faded, his eyes returning to a normal, tear-filled blue.
