The rest of the group follows as we make our way closer to the fire. She reaches for an a piece of ember bark that sits in a bowl near the fire. Lyra takes a deep breath, and throws the ember bark into the fire. "I'm afraid I will never be enough." she says so softly I almost don't hear her. The ember bark burns so brightly I have to look away. My gaze collides with Callan who has a blonde sitting comfortably on his lap. Something ugly burns in my stomach. I force myself to look away, and direct my attention back to the fire. My thoughts begin to spin as I try to settle on what fear I'm going to give up.

Her tears fell soundlessly into the water. Finally, Ember couldn’t take it anymore. Her vision went black as she lost consciousness, sinking slowly to the bottom of the crimson-stained fountain.

“Now we quit letting them write the story for us.” Lucien nods. “We get it all down. The fire. The church. Gideon's part. Elias cleaning up after.” “And the silver?” Ruby asks. I shake my head. “Not yet. They'll twist it into ghost stories or crazy talk.” “Strategic delay advised,” the silver agrees. Outside, Hallowpine starts waking up. Engines cough. Doors bang. Same winter morning routine. They have no idea the mirror's already cracked. They have no idea the thing they were afraid of isn't here to punish anybody.

She mimes breathing fire. "You're insane," Ash breathes. "I prefer 'creatively entertained,'" Ember corrects. "Now then, shall we begin? I have approximately three thousand pieces in my hoard that need sorting, and watching you two scramble while I work will make the time fly by!" She launches another fireball, and I grab Ash, pulling him aside as flames scorch the stone where we stood. "What do we do?" Ash whispers desperately. "Survive," I mutter. "And figure out how to escape before she decides we're not entertaining enough and eats us."

Ember’s POV The darkness enveloped her like luxurious velvet—soft, warm, and seemingly infinite. Ember floated aimlessly in a dreamscape, teetering on the precipice of consciousness and memory, her body still, her breath whispering through the stillness. She hadn’t spoken in days. Not truly. Words felt foreign now—too small for the weight she carried. The nurses were kind, but distant. Kael was protective, but unreadable. Only Isla had stayed. Only Isla had looked at her like she was still human.

Kaelen never looked back. I stood in the doorway, watching them walk to the elevator. In the garage, Kaelen opened the passenger door for Seraphina. As she got in, she deliberately rolled down the window. She took out that damned memory crystal. "Want to see it again?" she yelled at me. The crystal activated, and the humiliating images were projected onto the car window again—me, thirteen years ago, bound in silver chains, covered in blood, sobbing in despair... And this time, Kaelen sat in the driver's seat and watched it all without stopping her.

The crack blazed brighter than ever. For a long moment no one moved. The clearing was silent except for the hiss of the crack in the marker and the distant retreat of paws through underbrush. Mist drifted back in to fill the space where the pack had stood. Ava pulled herself upright against the stone. Her hands trembled. The silver glow had withdrawn into the token but left a faint shimmer under her skin, like moonlight trapped in her veins. She could still hear the echo of the whisper, softer now but insistent: Daughter of ash…

For me. Not a cage. Not a dorm. A legacy. The map trembled in my hands as if the fire wanted to leap free and carry me there that instant. To the estate tucked in Ember Hills, hidden, waiting. A place untouched by the politics of the Houses, untainted by patriarchs and proctors and traitors. A place that could be ours. I sank back against the bedframe, clutching the key and map to my chest, eyes burning with heat that had nothing to do with flame.

With a surge of adrenaline, he pulled her upwards, breaking the surface. "Ava!" He gasped, hauling her onto the rough concrete. Her head lolled back, eyes closed, lips tinged blue. Lucas knelt beside her, his face contorted with fear. "Let go of her!" He shoved Mateo aside, almost falling on top of Ava. "Ava please wake up." "Get off!" Mateo snarled, his voice thick with panic. "Give her some air!" Lucas ignored him, frantically pressing on Ava's chest. "Come on, Ava, breathe, damn it!" His voice cracked, tears spilling down his cheeks. "She's not... she's not..."

Karen sat up, her eyes filled with a vulnerability that Adam had seen way too much of in the past week. “I know how this seems; I know you think I'm crazy, but…" Her voice was shaking now.
