Ignite me (A collection of Short Stories)

Ignite me (A collection of Short Stories)

I wouldn't want to wake Jane or her dad. I fold myself on the couch after switching on the TV. As a horror freak, I search for The Conjuring movie on Netflix—haven’t watched 3. A few minutes into it, I hear footsteps. I whip my head around, and I see it's Christopher. He's in his nightwear, eyes fixed on the screen with furrowed brows, like he's stumbled into a nightmare. Onscreen, David Glatzel, a young boy, twists in demonic agony, his body cracking into unnatural shapes as the priest chants, holy water hissing on his skin amid guttural roars.

Step Too Far: Ruined By Him

Step Too Far: Ruined By Him

“You're saying you can marry us? Legally?" He shrugs. “I’m ordained online.” I can see my future self telling this story to Anne when she’s older: “And that’s how your mother and father were married on Christmas Eve by Santa Claus. On your birthday.” I burst into the room, tailed by Santa, who laughs as he walks in. “Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas!” Kate cocks her head to the side. “Really, Dorian?" she asks. "Santa? Are you purposely trying to re-traumatize me?"

His Christmas Present

His Christmas Present

I lifted my eyes slowly, cautiously, scared of what I would see in his face. Intensity. Concern. A simmering protective edge that made my stomach flip. And beneath it all, that same haunted searching look he’d had since the morning. The look of a man staring at something he didn’t understand but couldn’t walk away from. I exhaled shakily. “I think… I think it might be Caleb.” The name tasted sour. Like metal. Like old heartbreak that never fully left my throat. Damon’s expression didn’t soften. It sharpened, cutting into a shape that wasn’t safe. His pupils constricted. His jaw tightened. His breath left him in a slow, controlled exhale, almost silent.

Running A Food Stall In A Horror Game

Running A Food Stall In A Horror Game

As for where he was in the dark of night, well, he was right by my food stall. The audience easily guessed that something sinister was going on, and their discussion reached a fever pitch. [The newbie is done for. The players have started killing one another.] [The scariest part of this horror game isn’t just the ghouls. Sometimes players are even more ruthless to one another.] [Her cooking might be able to win over the ghoul NPCs, but it won’t do much against another player’s longsword!] [What’s she going to do now? Can someone communicate with Camden? I can spend money to convince him not to do it. I’ll spend whatever it takes!]

Horror Game? Looks Cute

Horror Game? Looks Cute

This was the punishment. At some point, green smoke crept in without warning. The temp plummeted. I shivered, and he slipped off his cloak, wrapping it around me. "Don't be afraid," he murmured. Afraid? Not even close. My perception glitch had me kind of... hyped. "They're back!" Mia yelled. "Grandpa and Grandma are back!" The door creaked open. Two shriveled elders shuffled in. Chat Feed went wild: [It's them. The revenants. Nobody survives past this.]

The CEO

The CEO

There is white fur around all hems and to top it all of a Christmas hat and some red lipstick and mascara then I'm done. A knock comes at the door as I place my earrings on, "come in!" Mr Clause struts in with all his glory. Instead of buttoning up his shirt he left it open allowing me to admire his toned torso and tattoos, the way his muscles ripple with each breath and move has me thinking of things no Mrs Clause should. "Is Santa allowed to be naughty on Christmas night?" He asks, I giggle and walk up to him. "So long as the workshop is still buzzing with life, Mrs Clause cannot allow, unfortunately," I sigh slipping my hands under the cloth over his shoulders.

I genuinely think the top-tier books in this weird subgenre are the ones that go for the throat instead of just dangling mistletoe over a jump scare. 'The Stupidest Angel' by Christopher Moore leans hard into comedy, but the parts with the zombie Santa still give me the creeps every December. Then there's 'Hark! The Herald Angels Scream,' that anthology edited by Christopher Golden – some of those stories are just bleak, like one where a department store elf is way more than he seems. It's the contrast that gets me; you're reading about tinsel and eggnog, and then suddenly there's something ancient and vicious lurking in the snow.

My personal favorite, though, is a novella called 'Secret Santa' by Andrew Shaffer. It starts as this funny office satire, but the cursed Yule gift the protagonist receives? It taps into this deep, pagan-level dread that feels older than Christmas itself. That's the sweet spot for me: when the terror isn't just a monster in a red suit, but something that uses the holiday's own imagery and forced joy against you.
