He said: "She was my mother." She held the notebook out to him. He did not take it. He said: "Not yet. Keep it until I'm ready. You're the archive's keeper now. It's yours to hold." She held it. She said: "When you're ready." He said: "When I'm ready." He went back to his work. She took the notebook home that night. She sat with it in the lamp's circle. She opened it to the last entry — the one that was not dated, not timed, the last thing.

I said. "Huh?" "Yeah, keep it. I have dozens of them, and you don't have any, it'll be selfish of me to collect them back from you," I added. Our gazes were glued to my novel but my mind was glued to her.

Her fingers wrapped around its edges, attempting to pull it away from his grasp. Yet, to her surprise, he held onto it firmly, as if unwilling to let go.
