Sasha nodded her head. “Why don’t you seem stressed by this? We might actually have to work endless shifts if there is an outbreak.” She felt her hairs already falling out just by thinking about it. “It will be a miracle if endless shifts will help.” Sasha said lightly. “What do you mean?” Sasha stared at her seriously. “There will be a heat wave soon… Well, that is what the media will call it. Rather than wasting time gathering information, you can help me design medical protocols. What do you say?”

My voice is stuck somewhere in my throat, and the only thing I can do is swallow it down like I always do. I force a laugh, though it comes out cracked. “Wow. Did you rehearse that in the mirror this morning, or does cruelty just come naturally to you?” Sasha smiles, slow and deliberate, like she’s won something. “See you around, nerdy human.” She turns, strutting away with her minions trailing after her, their giggles echoing down the hall. And me? I just stand there, hugging my books to my chest, pretending their weight is the reason my shoulders feel so heavy. I blink fast, because no way am I crying here where anyone can see.

She looked at it, and a small tear rolled down her cheek. “Take your time,” I told her. Sasha’s head shook side to side. “I don’t remember much after the… I woke up on the ground. My ears were ringing, but I could hear voices, shouting. My left side was…well, you can see. At least I had covered my face with my arm, survival tactics.” She tried to smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
