Nach meinem Abschluss verbrachte ich ein Jahr als Praktikantin bei meiner Mentorin, einer Heilerin, draußen im neutralen Gebiet – keine Rudel, keine Gesetze und niemand, der mich beschützte. Mein Bruder, der Lykaner-Vorsitzende aller Werwölfe, wurde darüber fast wahnsinnig. Er hatte panische Angst, dass ich mich in irgendeinen Einzelgänger verlieben und impulsiv eine leichtsinnige Gefährtenbindung eingehen würde. Deshalb wählte er persönlich einen arrangierten Gefährten für mich aus – Falcon Sterling, den Alpha des stärksten Rudels in Nordmeer. Er war attraktiv und gefährlich, eine lebende Legende. Mein Bruder befahl mir, für die Paarungszeremonie nach Hause zu kommen, also blieb mir nichts anderes übrig, als eine Luna-Krone auszusuchen. Im Juweliergeschäft fiel mein Blick sofort auf eine Krone aus purem Silber, besetzt mit Diamanten. Gerade als ich danach griff, schnitt eine schrille Frauenstimme dazwischen: „Die, die sie in der Hand hält, gefällt mir. Die nehme ich. Geben Sie her.“ Bevor ich reagieren konnte, riss mir der Verkäufer die Krone aus den Händen und kratzte dabei fast meine Haut auf. Ich richtete mich auf und zwang mich zur Ruhe. „Schon mal was von ‚Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst‘ gehört? Ich habe sie zuerst gesehen. Ist das hier etwa üblich?“ Die Wölfin drehte sich langsam zu mir um und musterte mich mit einem langen, spöttischen Blick. „Diese Krone kostet 300.000 Euro. Bist du sicher, dass du dir das leisten kannst, Dorfmädchen? Ich bin mit dem Alpha des Silbermond-Rudels aufgewachsen, mit Falcon Sterling. Hier bestimme ich die Regeln.“ Ich starrte sie an und musste fast lachen. War das nicht lustig? Falcon war zufällig mein arrangierter Gefährte. Ich zog mein Handy heraus und wählte die Nummer. „Hey, Falcon. Deine entzückende Jugendfreundin hat mir gerade die Luna-Krone geklaut, die ich bei der Paarungszeremonie tragen soll. Was meinst du, was ich dagegen tun sollte?“
