Long enough that I almost think Luca isn’t going to answer. “I know,” he says softly. A beat passes. Then Rowan snorts. “You’re so unbelievably fucked.” “Shut up, Rowan.” Their laughter fades down the hall. And despite everything… Dean Withers. The tracker beneath my skin. Callan Ravaryn and his stupid, gentle eyes. The memories of Skyless Keep. The panic still clawing at my chest… I find myself smiling. Just a little.

Ash was thrown backward, his body hitting the ice floor with a heavy thud. "Ash!" Rhea shrieked, struggling against the invisible weight pinning her to the altar. "Are you okay? Talk to me!" Ash scrambled to his feet, his breath coming in ragged, whistling gasps. He held his hands out in front of him. The skin from his fingertips to his wrists was gone, replaced by a raw, blackened char that shimmered with violet embers. The "cold-fire" had eaten through his flesh down to the bone in a matter of seconds.

And one thing she knows is that it was one of the two that gave her friend the bite marks. And yet, she had to help Marianne out.

Only the muffled crying of the pups and the wind moving across the altar could be heard. A few final silver sparks drifted upward. They gathered together, rising toward the northern mountains, toward the valley where my mother rested. My father lifted his head. Tears slid silently down his face. Ash lifted from the altar and scattered into the night sky like falling snow. Covering everything. Burying everything.
