The man in the chair could only manage a strangled, guttural sound, a wet sobbing noise that vibrated through his shattered mouth. His head thrashed from side to side, his eyes wide with a horror so pure it was almost beautiful to Zandrei.

“It’s us! That’s me in the middle, and you—and him! Pancake guy!” Alli’s throat caught. She took the paper, studying it. It was chaos, really. Wild scribbles. Wavy lines. No real sense of proportion. But she knew instantly who was who. Three stick figures: the tallest one with blonde hair and what looked like a beard and motor oil stains on his shirt; the shortest with impossibly long arms and pancake wheels beneath his feet; and her—with what appeared to be coffee in one hand and a heart drawn between her and Johnny’s stick figure in crayon red.

I had just ended my phone call with my dad when a text message from my husband, Felix Cole, popped up. Felix: [Jasper won the gold prize in the art competition. I'm holding a celebration party for him tonight. Get everything ready.] Felix was the leader of the Reapers, a powerful local mafia. And if we follow this, we unravel too.” I wanted to agree. But some part of me — the part that still felt the echo of standing in front of the stepbrother’s impossible calm — wanted to believe Ian’s madness had teeth. “Maybe,” I murmured. “But maybe it’s the only way.”
