The door clicked shut, and Ava collapsed into her chair, pressing her palm to her racing heart. She told herself she hated him. She told herself it was true. But the echo of his touch refused to fade.

By noon, Ava forced herself back into routine. Harper leaned casually against her desk, legs crossed, a teasing smile on her face.
“So,” Harper drawled, “how was your romantic dinner date with Mr. Perfect Husband?
Ava rolled her eyes, sipping her coffee. “It wasn’t romantic. It was… tense. We fought, made up, fought again.” She shrugged. “The usual.”
“Still sounds better than me,” Harper said with a laugh. “At least you’ve got flowers and restaurants. I’ve got… bills.”
