“They weren’t rogues. They were… organized. Too calm. Too sure of something they thought I was.” Maxine frowned. “Which is?” I hesitated. That word—awakening—still crawled across my spine. I had heard it in the dark, tied to a chair, breath shaking, Myron unconscious beside me. “She’s awakening,” one of them had said. “If we don’t trigger it now, someone else will.” I wrapped my arms around myself. “They kept talking like there was something inside me. Something that was supposed to… emerge.” Maxine blinked. “Like what? A power?”

Chapter: 42 ******** As Dirk slowly opened his eyes, he found himself surrounded by the familiar comfort of his bedroom. The events of the previous night felt like a distant memory, almost akin to a dream. Shifting in his bed, a renewed energy coursed through his veins, awakening his senses and leaving him feeling different, rejuvenated. It had been a while since he had last awakened feeling so refreshed, and it wasn't solely due to a good night's sleep. An underlying sense of excitement filled him at that moment.

They pulled me toward the light and I succumbed, letting them guide me. The process of reawakening was a gradual ascent from a turbulent dream. I stopped and collapsed near a small stream and I tried to catch my breath. My body felt dizzy, I tried to get up but I couldn’t move my legs anymore. No, I couldn’t pass out there. What if they eventually found me? I didn’t want to die — they looked like they were ready to kill me. But I couldn’t resist my eyes as they shut off. Maybe this was the end for me. I woke up to the scent of leather and pine. My body was aching and I looked around and found myself in an unfamiliar room. I wasn’t outside anymore, I was lying on a bed with clean sheets.

Senna’s POV I woke up in a bed that was too soft. That was the first thing I noticed. I didn’t notice the ceiling above me, or the quiet. I didn’t notice the unfamiliar scent of something clean and floral. I noticed the bed. It was so comfortable and lush, like being on a cloud. That’s how I knew I was somewhere very unfamiliar. I pushed myself up too fast. Pain flared through my side, like sharp knives. It was enough to make me suck in a breath.

The last minutes in which I would remain complete, with my Ember. I could feel that her end was soon; the sun that had never set in my dreams, not even once in all these years, was lowering itself to meet the flat line of the horizon. I breathed deeply as my heart clenched painfully. Many unsettling thoughts swirled into my mind. “Henry, what if I can’t wake up because I am not good at being awake? What if I don’t know how to do awake-things?” I thought out loud. Maybe my doubts about it were what was keeping me asleep and preventing Ember from healing. Maybe I was afraid? In the middle of this windwhirl of emotions, I didn’t know anything anymore.

The walls bowed inward like they were breathing, and while it was easy to conclude all of these things were happening because I was tired, I knew better. I bit down on my lips, probably jars enough to draw blood, but I didn't stop. The edges of the vision frayed and curled, before breaking apart at the last minute. You opened the door one too many times, I reminded myself. It always came with a price, but never in a million years did I think I was going to start experiencing it now. Not yet. “Cain.” I blinked awake at the sound of my name. I wasn't sure how long I was out for, but definitely long enough for my vision to transform my space into something entirely different.
