Everything would fall apart instantly. After a thorough investigation, I finally found out what each person is afraid of. I'm saving the best prank for last. They won't even see it coming. The question caught me off guard, and I was temporarily lost for words. My heart hammered against my ribs. I quickly forced a nervous laugh to keep up appearances. "Oh. No, of course I do. I am totally scared of him."

His hands were shaking. Naomi noticed. And for some reason… Her heart hurt. Lucas used to have steady hands. But now they trembled. As if he was afraid she would disappear again. And perhaps he was. Reassuring. “I’m scared,” I admit. “You can be scared,” she says. “And still be brave.” We sit in silence after that, drinking tea, the weight of my thoughts a little easier now. I don’t understand everything yet—but I’m starting to. And maybe that’s enough for now.
