First Sparks
The storm continued its relentless assault on the cabin, rain hammering the roof as thunder rolled in the distance. Betty remained curled against me on the couch, her head on my chest, our legs tangled under the shared blanket. The fire crackled warmly, casting flickering shadows across her face. My hand still rested on her shoulder from the massage, but the air between us had shifted thicker, electric. I could feel her heartbeat racing against my side.
“You’re still tense,” I murmured, my fingers tracing slow circles on her arm. “That ex really did a number on you, didn’t he? Talk to me, Betty. What else is weighing on you?”
