She feared for them both. She'd heard stories about the power of the book. The first tale she heard was her mother telling her about the Moon Goddess' curse in the book. And how whichever wolf that writes their name in the book lives eternally with insurmountable power that often drives them insane. She also knew that if that wolf gets his hands on the book, he'll turn into something horrible. He'll become a werewolf, like the Wolf King. But she doubted Gerald had what it took to control the power.

I whispered, gripping his shirt. “No one cares, Sugar Plum,” he reassured me, lifting my chin with his hand. “This is acceptable to wolves. This is how mates act with each other.” I blew out a breath and nodded, then looked at the book in his hands. “What’s the big deal about this book?” I asked him. “This book,” he said, lifting it by one corner and showing the cover to me, “is filled with the stories of our people. Every werewolf family has a copy, and all werewolf children grow up hearing the tales.”

Instead, he padded towards me with his typical slow and deliberate movements. As it drew closer, I saw that the bear was holding something in its maw. It dropped the object at my feet and I saw that it was a small, leather-bound book. The bear looked upwards at me, its eyes seeming to bore into my soul. And then, in a motion so almost human, it nodded its head. I stared at it in amazement, really not sure what my next move was. But then I looked down at the book, and with an eruption of clarity inside of me, this feeling suddenly made much sense.

Annie's response came in a hushed tone, "New Forest." The Alpha bear made a mental note to contact the old alpha in New Forest to verify her story. Annie, compelled by the urgency of the situation, continued her narrative. She recounted stumbling upon John's abandoned campsite, explaining how she had decided to watch over it. As the night wore on and he didn't return, she confessed, "I thought I could take the food and some goods, but then John suddenly showed up. He was kind to me. We planned to leave come morning, but the wolves attacked and captured him."

He would be forced to give up everything in his life for power, so he needed to kill the other man to ensure that he wouldn't interfere with Alaric's plans any more than was necessary. “So that way.” 16B was a much larger section than I expected. Still, it made sense since wolves were always passing down stories to the younger generations, true or not. “Found it,” I said. It took forty-five minutes but I found a book on the Moon Blessed that was not a kid's bedtime story. “When the Goddess becomes a man,” I read out the title. From the cover, I could tell it was still a fiction story for the most part. But it was better than nothing at all.

Snow-bright eyes reflected the stars. She ran. Not to escape. To remember. The forest opened to her, paths revealing themselves not as roads but as stories layered into the land. She felt old fire buried beneath stone. Felt the echo of wolves who had once lived unclaimed, unbound by hierarchy. *We were never meant to be owned,* the white wolf said—not as a separate voice now, but as shared knowing. The few bears that still roamed the mountains were all hibernating comfortably in their dens. It could have been worse, Nicky and Teri knew—they could have been forced to share a tent with their eight-year-old brothers instead of with each other.
