“Look, do you want the pups or not?” “Yes, I do. Tell me how to get my prize’s back.” Burican smiled. “Follow me.” The bear told him. His beast was angry with him. How dare he turn his back on his clan. He kept fighting with his human side. “You can’t do this!” “They are innocent cubs.” His beast yelled at him. “They aren’t my cubs or part of my clan, so they are not my concern.” Bear scoffed at his beast. He walked in front of Burican and Max showing them the hidden entrance to the clan bunker.

“When I engage it, you run. Don’t look back.” “No,” I whispered, horror-stricken. Not him too. I couldn’t lose him too. “It’s the only way,” he said, his eyes never leaving the bear. “It’s my duty.” The bear lowered its head, its muscles coiling like springs. It was going to charge. In that split second, a memory surfaced. A story Kairi had told Elisse just a few nights ago, by a fire that felt a lifetime away. A story about the old magic of the mountains, and the creatures that served it.

Everyone chuckled but Bruce. “I told you he wouldn’t find it funny,” Liam said with a smirk and shook his head. “Let me try one,” Ryan said. “A hunter hears about a huge bear in the woods that no one can kill. Being a master hunter, he grabs his rifle and goes out into the woods. He sees the huge black bear. The hunter raises his gun, he gets him in his sights, and fires. Bam! When the gun smoke clears, the bear is gone. Then the hunter feels someone tapping him on the shoulder. He turns around and sees the bear.”

“Tasha, we love you. We don’t want you to leave us.” I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I am not leaving you guys. I just need to know the truth. Why won’t you just tell me?” He picked me up and I put my legs around his waist. “What if I told you that the bears in the forest woods were really people and the king of bears wants you to be his mate?” My eyes widened. “I would tell you that as awesome as that sounds, people don’t shift into animals. Even if they did, who has ever heard of a bear? Wolves, sure, but never a bear.”

That's when I noticed she didn't have a book, she was telling him a story as she looked off, like she was watching the story unravel in her mind as she spoke out loud. "Once the bear was caught in a net. He thrashed about this way and that until he was exhausted. Then he fell asleep. While he slept a host of little mice began playing all over his great body. Their tiny feet tickled him and he woke with a start. The mice scampered off, all but one that the bear caught under his paw. "Tweek! Tweek!" the frightened little mouse cried. "Let me go! Let me go! Please let me go! If you do I'll reward you some day! I will!"

I murmur, leaning forward so my voice is a rumble between us, “let me tell you a story…” When she doesn't interrupt, I continue. "A bear had a cub, and it was very hungry. So one day he went hunting. He saw a human baby, abandoned, and decided to make it his cub's meal. He picked up the baby with his fangs digging into its skin and killing it. When he arrived at the place his cub was, there was blood." Charlotte's face creases but she remains silent, listening. "A hunter had mistaken the cub for a rabbit, and shot it. He stared up at the bear shocked to see a baby in its mouth. And the bear shocked to see his cub dead."

I whispered back, folding my arm under my head. “Cal hasn’t watched the jungle book So here we are. Join us.” “Yes, Mommy, Join us. It's great and you will love it. The wolves are big big ones… very massive like Hazel. They have Hazel’s fur too,” Cal rattled in excitement bouncing up and down. “Come on mummy. I will show you Mowgli. He is a boy like me.” “Mommy,” he huffed when he saw I was not making any attempt to get up.

Behind her stood a bear with its large paw resting on her shoulder. It was longer, and kind of different.”
